大学大二考 Passage One Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage: For the most part, rapid economic development has been a boon. But there is a down side to development -- health problems such as overweight are all becoming more prevalent, as more people take taxis to work instead of riding their bicycles, and other labor-saving devices become more popular. An increasingly fast pace of life makes it difficult for people to spend time working out or playing sports. "I know exercise is good for your health," a young lady said. "But after a busy work week, the only thing I want to do is watch some TV and go to sleep." That attitude may explain the results of a recent nationwide study, which suggested 15 percent of urban adults in China are overweight, a large number of people over the age of 40 suffer from high blood pressure and cardiac ailments. Local researchers found that 31.2 percent of elderly respondents were getting enough exercise, but less than 9 percent of youngsters and the middle-aged got an adequate amount of physical activity. Elderly people understand the importance of protecting their health. The young people, however, are busy working and use this as an excuse to avoid exercise. In fact, physical exercise doesn't require much time, money or a special gymnasium. (S1) People can make use of any time and any place at their convenience to take part in sports. Walking quickly, cycling, climbing the stairs and dancing are all helpful methods to enhance one's health. The benefits of adding a little more activity to your life are priceless. "There is no need to be an athlete, however," a local doctor said. People should walk for 30 minutes a day and take part in some other physical activity three to five times a week. He warns, however, that people in poor physical shape should start slowly, and build up over time. China has taken the need for more exercise to heart, with the government running several activities last Sunday, which was the designated World Health Day. Pamphlets and posters based on the theme "Move for Health" were distributed nationwide, encouraging people to develop a positive and healthy lifestyle. 26. Rapid economic development has resulted in all the following except _____________. A) an increasing number of taxi passengers B) the wide use of labor-saving devices C) an increasingly fast pace of life D) people's awareness of the importance of exercise 27. Some people are getting overweight because __________. A) they are too busy to have any time for exercise B) they are ignorant of the benefits of exercise C) they are too weak to participate in physical activity D) they are short of money to pay for different exercises 28. According to the passage, who need regular daily exercise most? A) People taking taxis to work. B) Urban adults with full-time jobs. C) Elderly people suffering from high blood pressure. D) Youngsters dreaming of becoming professional athletes. 29. What is the main idea of the last paragraph but one? A) Many people are still unable to afford the cost of physical exercises. B) Nobody should take part in physical activity in order to be an athlete. C) Moderate physical exercise is usually enough for ordinary people. D) Old or sick people should only take part in physical exercises of the slowest type. 30. By referring to rapid economic development as "a boon" at the beginning of the passage, the author means that ____________. A) it has benefited the general public greatly B) it has done harm to people's health nationwide C) it is going faster than anyone could have imagined D) it has helped to establish a positive and healthy lifestyle of the public Passage Two Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage: Many of the most damaging and life threatening types of weather-torrential rains, severe thunderstorms, and tornadoes-begin quickly, strike suddenly, and disappear rapidly, destroying small regions while leaving neighboring areas untouched. Such event as a tornado struck the northeastern section of Edmonton, Alberta, in July 1987. Total damages from the tornado exceeded $250 million, the highest ever for any Canadian storm. Conventional computer models of the atmosphere have limited value in predicting short lived local storms like the Edmonton tornado, because the available weather data are generally not detailed enough to allow computers to study carefully the subtly atmospheric changes that come before these storms. In most nations, for example, weather-balloon observations are taken just once every twelve hours at locations typically separated by hundreds of miles. With such limited data, conventional forecasting models do a much better job predicting general weather conditions over large regions than they do forecasting specific local events. Until recently, the observation intensive approach needed for accurate, very short-range forecasts, or "Nowcasts", was not feasible. The cost of equipping and operating many thousands of conventional weather stations was extremely high, and the difficulties involved in rapidly collecting and processing the raw weather data from such a network were hard to overcome. Fortunately, scientific and technological advances have overcome most of these problems. Radar systems, automated weather instruments, and satellites are all capable of making detailed, nearly continuous observation over large regions at a relatively low cost. Communications satellites can transmit data around the world cheaply and instantaneously, and modern computers can quickly compile and analyze this large volume of weather information. Meteorologists and computer scientists now work together to design computer programs and video equipment capable of transforming raw weather data into words, symbols, and vivid graphic displays that forecasters can interpret easily and quickly. As meteorologists have begun using these new technologies in weather forecasting offices, Nowcasting is becoming a reality. 31. It can be inferred from the passage that the value of damages from torrential rains, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes is ____. A) very high B) overestimated C) impossible to forecast D) unforgettable 32. Why do conventional models of the atmosphere fail to predict such a short-lived tornado? A) The conventional models are controlled by some people with limited knowledge. B) The conventional models do not have enough found to meet their basic needs. C) The available weather data are generally not detailed enough. D) The conventional models lack of necessary devices and equipments. 33. It can be inferred from the passage that conventional forecasting models are now mostly used for _____. A) predicting general weather conditions over large regions B) supplying support to agricultural C) studying weather-torrential rains, severe thunderstorms, and tornadoe. D) giving weather report 34. What does "Nowcasts" mean according to the passage? A) forecasts without weatherman B) important forecasts C) accurate, very short-range forecasts D) 100% right forecasts 35. According to the passage, what makes "Nowcasting" a reality? A) Radar systems B) Automated weather instruments C) Satellites D) Computer programs and video equipment. Passage Three Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage: e careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you B think. A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩). In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words. In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before. The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination(排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive. Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品种)known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months. It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return! 36. From paragraph 2 we know that __ . A) animals are as clever as human beings B) dogs are smarter than parrots and chimpanzees C) chimpanzees have very good word-learning skills D) dogs have similar 'learning abilities as 3-year-old children 37. Both experiments show that . A) Rico is smart enough to get all commands right B) Rico can recognize different things including toys C) Rico has developed the ability of learning mathematics D) Rico won't forget the names of objects once recognizing them 38. Which of the following statements is true? A) The purpose of the experiments is to show the border collie's mental abilities. B) Rico has a better memory partly because of its proper early training. C) The border collie is world-famous for recognizing objects. D) Rico is born to understand its owner's commands. 39. What does the writer want to tell us? A) To train your dog. B) To talk to your dog. C) To be friendly to your dog. D) To be careful with your dog. 40. Which one is the best title for the article? A) Rico’s Discovery B) The Master of Dogs C) Do Dogs Understand Us? D) How to Train Your Dog? Many students say that a lack of concentration is their biggest problem. It seriously affects their ability to study, so do their test results. If so, use these tips to help you. Study Techniques You should always study in the same place. You shouldn’t sit in a position that you use for another purpose. For example, when you sit on a sofa to study, your brain will think it is time to relax. Don’t watch TV while you are studying. Experts warn that your concentration may be reduced by 50 percent if you attempt to study in this way. Always try to have a white wall in front of you, so there is nothing to distract (make less concentrated) you. Before sitting down to study, gather together all the equipment you need. Test-taking Skills All your hard work will be for nothing if you are too nervous to take your test. Getting plenty of rest is very important. This means do not study all night before your test! It is a better idea to have a long-term study plan. Try to make a timetable for your study which lasts for a few months. Exercise is a great way to reduce pressure. Doing some form of exercise every day will also improve your concentration. Eat healthy food too. When you arrive in the examination room, find your seat and sit down. Breathe slowly and deeply. Check the time on the clock during the test, but not too often. Above all, take no notice of everyone else and give the test paper your undivided attention. 41. Which of the following statements is not what you can use these tips to do? A) Improve the way you study. B) Help you concentrate on your study. C) Increase your ability to study. B) Your eyes will become tired if you try to read a text which is on a flat surface C) It will help you understand the book more easily. D) It will help to get a new book. 4. What does the underlined word “it” refer to? A) Your study desk or table. B) Your textbook. C) Your dictionary. D) The equipment you need. 45. What can be inferred from the passage? A) You shouldn’t look at everyone else during the test. B) You will have enough energy to deal with your study and exams by eating healthy diet. C) You’ll concentrate more if there is nothing to distract you. D) If you feel tired during study, you can walk around for a few minutes. Translation Directions: Translate the underlined parted of the following passage into Chinese. I saw it land. My chair was backed up against the wall in the sheriff's office, and I was looking at the stars through the windows and wondering if I ought to knock off and hit the sack or keep on listening to Cameron curse real steady as he went over his columns of figures for the hundred twenty-seventh time. It looked like a shooting star at first, but then the track of light broadened into two things that looked like rocket exhausts and the thing came down without a sound. Two men got out. I couldn't say anything or do anything. I couldn't choke or point; I couldn't even bug my eyes. I just sat there. Cameron? He never looked up. There was a knock on the door. It opened and the two men from the flying saucer stepped in. I would have thought they were city fellows if I hadn't seen the flying saucer land. They wore gray suits, with white shirts and dark red-brown ties. They had on black shoes and black hats. They had dark complexions, black wavy hair and brown eyes. They had very serious looks on their faces and were about five foot ten apiece. They looked very much alike. God, I was scared. But Cameron just looked up when the door opened and frowned. He said, "What can I do for you, folks?" and he tapped his hand on the forms so it was obvious he hadn't much time. One of the two stepped forward. He said, "We have had your people under observation a long time." He pronounced each word carefully and all by itself. Cameron said, "My people? All I got's a wife. What's she been doing?"
