ow,thewomanfinallyboughtthedressshehadfirstaskedfor.58ThenumberofvisitorstothevillageofFrinleyhasincreasedbecausethereissaidtobea‘cursedtree’nearthechurch.Sincethevillagersbelievethatifanyonepicksaleafhewilldie,theyhaveaskedthevicartohavethetreecutdown.Asthetreeisausefulsourceofincome,thevicarhasrefusedtohavethetreecutdown.Meanwhile,thoughtouristshavebeenpickingleaves,notoneofthemhascometoharm.59Ourdog,Rex,usedtositoutsidethefrontgateandbarksothatsomeonewouldopenit.Eversincemyhusbandtrainedhimtoopenthegatehimself,Rexhasdevelopedanotherbadhabit.Hebarkswhenheisinthegardensothatsomeonewilllethimout.Afterthisheletshimselfinandbarksuntilsomeoneopensthegateagain.Nowthatmyhusbandhasremovedthegate,Rexhasdisappeared.60Thewritervisitedafortune-telleratavillagefairwhotoldhimthatarelationwascomingtoseehim.Sheaddedthatawomanheknewwellwouldspeaktohimwhenheleftthetentandhewouldfollowheroutofthefair.Thiscametruebecausehiswifespoketohimwhenhewentoutside.Shetoldhimtheyhadtomeethissisteratthestationandsheledhimoutofthefair.61WhentheHubbletelescopewaslaunchedintospaceinApril1990,thepicturesitsentuswereverydisappointingbecausethemainmirrorwasfaulty.Fourastronautswillsoonbemakingthenecessaryrepairs,andeventually,picturesfromtheHubblewilltellusagreatdealabouttheageandsizeoftheuniverse.62Ittookthefiremennearlythreeweekstogettheforestfireundercontrol.Nowthatallthegreattreeshadbeenburnt,therewasdangerthatheavyrainwouldcauseseriousfloodswhichwoulddestroythesurroundingvillages.Topreventthis,theforestauthoritiesorderedgrass-seedwhichwassprayedoverthegroundbyplanesfornearlyamonth.Bythetimethatitbegantorain,thegrasshadtakenrootinmanyplaces.63WhenJeremyHampden,whoisgreatlyadmiredforhisgreatsenseofhumour,wasinvitedtomakeaspeechataweddingreception,heimmediatelyagreedtodoso.Sincethespeechcontainedalotoffunnystories,itwasagreatsuccess.Whenhissix-year-olddaughter,Jenny,wantedtogohomeafterhisspeech,Jeremywasdisappointed.Shehadnotenjoyeditbecauseshedidnotliketoseesomanypeoplelaughingathim.64Thetunnel,whichtheFrenchengineer,AiméThomé,plannedtobuildundertheEnglishChannelin1858,wouldbeventilatedbytallchimneysbuiltabovesealevel.AnEnglishman,WilliamLowe,suggestedabetterplantwoyearslater.Passingtrainswouldsolvetheproblemofventilationinhisproposeddoublerailwaytunnelbecausetheywoulddrawinfreshairbehindthem.Thoughworkbeganforty-twoyearslater,itwasstoppedbecausetheBritishfearedinvasion.However,thetunnelwasofficiallyopenedonMarch7,1994.65Afterhavingdecidedtotakesomepresentstoachildren'shospital,thecircusowner,JimmyGates,dressedupasFatherChristmasandsetoffdownthemainstreetofthecityridinganelephantcalledJumbo.Onbeingtoldthathewasholdingupthetraffic,JimmyagreedtogoatoncebutJumborefusedtomove,sofifteenpolicemenhadtopushhimoffthemainstreet.Ashehadagoodrecord,however,Jumbowasnotarrested.66TheLancasterbomberwasnottoobadlydamagedwhenitcrashedonaremoteislandintheSouthPacific.Thenthewreckremainedundisturbedfortwenty-sixyearsuntilitwasrediscoveredinanaerialsurveyoftheisland.TheFrenchauthoritieshadtheplanepackagedandmovedinpartsbacktoFrance,whereagroupofenthusiastswillbehavingitrestored.Theywillhavetohavethreeoftheenginesrebuilt,butthefourthengineisstillinperfectconditionbecauseacolonyofbeeshadturneditintoahiveanditwastotallycoveredinbeeswax.67Tazieff,thePolishscientist,wenttoLakeKivuintheCongoin1948toobserveanewvolcanowhichhecalledKituro.Aftertakingphotographs,hehadtoleavealmostatoncebecauseariverofliquidrockthreatenedtosurroundhim.Heescapedjustintimebuthereturnedtwodayslaterwhenthevolcanohadbecomequiet.ThistimeheclimbedintothemouthofKituroinordertotakephotographsandmeasuretemperatures.68EventhoughElizabethtriedtoavoidmeetingNigelDykes,shewasnotabletodoso.Ashealwaysinsistedonaccompanyingher,shehadtothinkofawayofpreventinghimfromfollowingheraroundallmorning.Whenshetoldhimshewasgoingtothedentist,hesaidhewouldcomewithherbecausetherewasalwaysplentytoreadinthewaitingroom.69Mr.Eameshaddrivensuccessfullythroughheavytrafficduringhisthirddrivingtestwhentheexaminerinstructedhimtodriveoutoftown.Hetoldhimtosupposethatachildwouldsuddenlycrosstheroadinfrontofhim.Mr.Eameswouldhavetostopthecarwithinfivefeetwhentheexaminertappedonthewindow.Thoughhetappedloudly,Mr.Eamesdidnotreactquicklyenoughandwastoldthathehadjustkilledthechild.70Adrunksuddenlywanderedintothemiddleoftheringduringabullfightandshoutedruderemarksandwavedaredcap.Ignoringthematador,thebullchargedatthedrunk,buthesteppedasidetoletitpass.Thecrowdcheeredandthedrunkbowed.Justafterthis,threemendraggedthedrunktosafetywhilethebulllookedonsympatheticallybeforeitoncemoreturneditsattentiontothematador.71AftertheHousesofParliamentwereburntdownin1834,SirBenjaminHallwasmaderesponsiblefortheconstructionofahugeclock,whichbecameknownasBigBen.Itisveryaccuratedespiteitsimmensesize,forofficialsfromtheGreenwichObservatoryhavetheclockcheckedtwiceaday.Thisclock,whichhasrarelygonewrong,canbeheardontheB.B.C.Whenitisstriking,becausemicrophonesareconnectedtotheclocktower.72SirMalcolmCampbellsetupaland-speedrecordin1935drivingacarcalledBl
