Choose a good major or a good university
Good morning ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests:
I consider it a great honor to be asked to speak about “Should I choose a good major or a good university?” Senior three students will face the question after they pass the college entrance examination. Some students prefer to consider majors first so that they can learn what they are interested in. It will also make it possible for them to do their favorite jobs in the future. However, those who think differently believe that the environment is more important to one’s development. They also believe that students who graduate from leading universities are often more likely to find a good job. Honestly, the best choice is to choose a good major at a good university. But if we can’t obtain both, as far as I am concerned, I strongly consider that a good university carries more weight than the major.
First of all, more and more graduates’ jobs they can find are not related to their majors at all and this phenomenon is becoming more and more common. In fact, most traditional employment units have specific preference for key university graduates for the reason they think those graduates are more intelligent and have higher IQ. The research about China’s 20 years education points out that more than 90% graduates who are from
key universities are employed, but the figure of employment for graduates from common universities declines 20% or more. That means major is useless.
Secondly, key universities have more excellent teachers and professors, more perfect infrastructure and greater learning atmosphere, which plays a very important role in your character and personal quality. As we all know, only students who did outstanding work in college entrance examination can they be admitted by key universities. And many government policies also support these key universities, which makes them have more power to contribute to students. Therefore, these students in key universities have much more opportunity to achieve what they want to do.
Thirdly, as I pointed out in the front, most jobs are not related to graduates’ majors while friends and senior fellow students would give more help to you. Those your fellow students are really a kind of resource for your career. Therefore, students graduated from key universities or famous universities have higher opportunity to achieve their cause and they have more friend-sourcing.
Finally, most of universities have a changing major system that you have a chance to change the major when you become a freshmen or a sophomore. As long as you study hard in the university, this is a good opportunity for you to choose a major which you fond of. In this way, you can possess a good major and a good university’s diploma.
In a word, a good university will benefit you a lot and it’s very wise to choose a good university rather than a major.
That is all. Thanks for your attention.
