Section D Directions:Read the following passage and complete the sentences or answer the questions according to the information given in the passage you have just read. Marriage can vary greatly from country to country. For example, many western countries only accept marriages between one womwn and one man. However, on other parts of the world a man may have several wives. There are also many different kind of marriage ceremonies plactised around the world. These ceremonies can be very short and simple, or very long and complicated. On of the largest and the most expensive wedding ceremonies was held in Dubai in 1981. At this wedding, the well-to-d0 son of Sheik Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum married Princess Salama. The wedding ceremony took seven days to complete. It was held in a large building which was built for the ceremony. The building looked like a place where sporting events are usually held. The bride and groom needed a large place for their wedding because there were 20,000 guests at the wedding. The wedding cost was close to $44 million. A man and woman may choose to get married for many reasons. Sometimes they marry because they are in love. Sometimes they marry because their parents tell them that they must marry. The youngest couple in the world to get married was an 11-month-old boy and a three-month-old girl. This couple got married in Bangladesh in 1986. The parentys of bride and groom arranged the marriage in order to end a fight between the two families without either family having to lose face in the end. The families had been arguing over a farm for 20 years. Both ffamilies thought that they owned the farm, but no one knew for sure. The fight ended for good when the young boy married the young girl. The two famolies agreed to give the farm to the young couple. 1. There are many differet kinds of marriage ceremony. They can be _______________________. 2. Why did the bride and groom in Dubai need a large place for their wedding ? 3. What was strange about the wedding in Bangladesh in 1986? 4. Their parents arranged the marriage in order to ___________________________. Keys 1. very short and simple, or very long and complicated 2. Because there were 20,000 guests at the wedding. 3. The couple were very young, just two babies. 4. end a fight between the two families Section D Directions:Read the following passage and complete the sentences or answer the questions according to the information given in the passage you have just read. Many years ago, I was eating (chicken, as I recall) at Kentucky Fried Chicken. I was watching a little child (maybe a couple years old), whose mother (it would seem) was waiting in line to order food. The child walked up to a curtain, pulled it back, and was delighted to find a blank wall, no windows. The child tried to call his/her mother”s attention to this situation. And the mother said, “Get away from there.” To me, the child represented all of the people who are curious about the world, who delight in new discoveries. The mother represented the multitudes (众多) of other people, who are not curious, whose minds are no longer alive to that sort of thing. You and I know that curtains and windows go together, but not always. We would not be surprised to find a blank wall behind a curtain. But, we are curious and childlike, aren’t we? We want to know things, things that other people know, and things that no one has ever known. It was a delight to watch this child. I may have enjoyed the child’s discovery more than the child did. I was saddened to think about the mother. Of course, she may have been a wonderful person, with a wonderful mind. She just may not have been in tune with her child, at that moment. But, I wondered if this child would be stifled (抑制), worn down, like so many, and become an adult without any childlike thoughts. That saddened me. To my mind, the two golden, childlike properties of a brain are curiosity and creativity. Many adult activities (jobs, hobbies, pastimes) use one or the other of these properties, in particular the sciences (mainly curiosity) and the arts(mainly creativity). 1. Why did the child try to call his/her mother’s attention? 2. To the writer, the child represented the people who __________________________________. 3. What saddened the writer? 4. According to the writer, ____________________________________________ are the golden, childlike properties of a brain. Keys: 1. Because he /she was surprised to find a blank wall behind a curtain. 2. are curious about the world, and delight in new discovery. 3. The possibility that a child would be stifled and become an adult without any childlike thoughts. 4. curiosity and creativity Section D Directions:Read the following passage and complete the sentences or answer the questions according to the information given in the passage you have just read. Leisure and recreation and the chance to play are not luxuries for children, but essentials for normal healthy development. Long hours and days of uninterrupted work have a bad effect on children, narrowing their horizons and often disturbing them emotionally. Why then do parents allow or indeed encourage their children to work? The answer, of course, is poverty. The child's wage, however little, may mean the difference between the family eating or not eating. Many parents, not educated themselves, don't understand the value of schooling, and can neither afford to buy books and school materials, especially if the father himself is out of work. The unfortunate situation is that child labour actually contributes to adult unemployment by providing a very cheap alternative to it. This fact is illustrated in Children of the World: 30 per cent of the entire labour force in Tanzania is composed of boys and girls aged 10 to 14, and in Thailand 25 per cent, as compared to the United States where they cover only 1.6 per cent of the labour force. In agricultural areas this age old child labour system can even be beneficial as a leisurely training for the tasks of adulthood. In performing light tasks, the child feels useful and important, and this sort of work teaches him a sense of responsibility towards others and a sense of belonging. But the system which applies in the countryside becomes cruel and inhuman when it comes to the cities. 1. According to the passage, a long period of physical work has a bad effect on children’s ____________________________________________________. 2. The main reason why parents allow or encourage children to work is ___________________. 3. What will be more likely to happen if more children go to work? 4. Does child labour system have a positive value in cities? Why? 参考答案: 1.mental development 2. their poverty / that they are poor. 3 More adults will be more likely to lose their jobs 4. How I Turned to Be Optimistic I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning. I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see-—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then. The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to "the hard times." My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives. From my experiences I have learned one important rule: almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy. 81.Upon leaving for America the author felt_________________________________________. 82.How did the author get to know America? 83. Camping wild is a wonderful way to experience the natural world and, at its best, it makes little environmental influence. But with increasing numbers of people wanting to escape into the wilderness, it is becoming more and more important to camp unobtrusively(不引人注目地)and leave no mark. Wild camping is not permitted in many places, particularly in crowded lowland Britain. Wherever you are, find out about organizations responsible for managing wild spaces, and contact them to find out their policy on camping and shelter building. For example, it is fine to camp wild in remote parts of Scotland, but in England you must ask the landowner’s permission, except in national parks. Camping is about having relaxation, sleeping outdoors, experiencing bad weather, and making do without modern conveniences. A busy, fully-equipped campsite(野营地)seems to go against this, so seek out smaller, more remote places with easy access to open spaces and perhaps beaches. Better still, find a campsite with no road access: walking in makes a real adventure. Finding the right spot to camp is the first step to guaranteeing a good night’s sleep. Choose a campsite with privacy and minimum influence on others and the environment. Try to use an area where people have obviously camped before rather than creating a new spot. When camping in woodland, avoid standing dead trees, which may fall on a windy night. Avoid animal runs and caves, and possible homes of biting insects. Make sure you have most protection on the windward side. If you make a fire, do so downwind of your shelter. Always consider what influence you might have on the natural world. Avoid damaging plants. A good campsite is found, not made—changing it should be unnecessary. 81. You don’t have to ask for pe rmission when camping in __________________ . 82.
