More than 150 years ago, a busy Englishman, Sir Henry, asked a friend to design a card so that he didn't have to write holiday letters to his friends at the end of the year. Those paper cards are now the tradition. But time, like sunlight, is still in short supply for December. That's why the Internet is ready to make a change in holiday greeting customs. Already, those, who are always busy, like sending video greetings by e-mail. So, don't be surprised to find a lively card in your electronic mail box at the end of the year or at any time you should have one. A recent survey by the Shared Greetings Company found 50 percent of all the Internet users will send online cards especially during the holiday seasons. “That is a lot easier, and it is lively,” said Carol, a New Yorker, who had stopped at the Shared Greetings Company demonstration(展示) online. With her children's help, she sent her first e-card before Thanksgiving Day. “It was the first time I had done something like this; it's quite enjoyable,” she said. “I will send online Christmas cards to my friends,” said Marcos, a 22-year-old student. “It costs so little and you can even send numbers of greetings at a time.” But he added, “the e-card also has its limits, and I don't think it is ready to replace the paper card for the more formal or traditional occasions. For some people, I would rather buy paper cards and mail them traditionally. I believe it is more personal and respectful in that way,” he said. Well, for those who are very busy but still prefer to do a lot of greetings to different receivers in the holiday season, the Internet may have another way. “Now you can use the Net to decide and send as many as 50 stylish cards, which allows the buyer to choose the inside saying, as well as the ink colour and typeface, only costing about 30 minutes,” said Julie, vice-president of marketing for an electronic card company-Hallmark Company. “And if you are in a less hurry, you can spend another 30 minutes sitting in your home or office to create a photo card, showing off your kids, your pets or even your new house--anything as your favorite designing for your relatives and friends.” 61. A. formal B. adventurous C. personal D. creative B College visits are important. Before you commit years of your life and thousands of dollars to a school, you need to make sure you’re choosing a place that matches your personality and interests. You can’t get the “feel” of a school from a guidebook, so be sure to visit the campus. Below are a few tips for getting the most out of your college visit. 1.Explore on your own Of course you should take the official campus tour, but allow time to walk around on your own. Tour guides will show you a school’s selling points, but the o1dest and prettiest buildings aren’t the whole picture of a college, nor is the one dorm room that has been cleaned to perfection for visitors. Try to walk the extra mile and get the complete picture of the campus. 2.Read the bulletin boards When you visit the student center, academic buildings and residence halls, take a few minutes to read the bulletin boards. They provide a quick and easy way to see what’s happening on campus. The ads for lectures, clubs and plays can give you a good sense of the types of activities going on outside of the classrooms. 3.Eat in the dining hall You can get a good feel for student life by eating in the dining hall. Try to sit with students if you can, but even if you are with your parents, you can observe the bustling activity around you. Do the students seem happy or stressed? Is the food good? Are there enough healthy options? Many admission offices will give prospective students coupons(优惠券)for free meals in the dining halls. 4. Visit a class in your major If you know what you want to study, a class visit makes a lot of sense. You’ll get to observe other students in your field and see how engaged they are in classroom discussion. Try to stay after class for a few minutes and chat with the students to get their impressions of their professors and major. Be sure to call in advance to schedule a classroom visit--most colleges don’t allow visitors to drop in on 6 class unannounced. 5.Talk to lots of students Your campus tour guide has been trained to market the school. Try to hunt down students who aren’t getting paid to impress you. These unplanned conversations can often provide you with information about co1lege life that isn’t part of the admission script. Few university officials wi11 tell you if their students spend all weekend drinking or studying, but a group of random students might. For more tips, please go to collegeapps.about.com. 66. The underlined phrase “walk the extra mile” probably means _______________. A. take a longer walk B. make better plans C. make more effort D. be more careful 67.Reading the bulletin boards can help you _____________. A. decide the major you want to study B.find out about the after-class activities on campus C. get free coupons from the admission offices D.find out whether their students party or work all weekend 68. To get a real idea of the college during a visit, it’s best to talk to__________. A. famous professors B. campus tour guides C. admission officers D .random students 69.If you plan to attend a class on campus, ____________. it’s best to drop in a class in your major B. read the school guidebook A. before you go C. try to take part in the class discussions D .ask what the students think of their teachers and majors C The addictive pull of Internet shopping is dragging thousands of victims into a rise of debt, including thousands of women who have run up huge credit card bills they cannot repay. The appeal of 24-hour access and the explosion in goods and services on offer has seen a 10 percent increase in credit card debts in the UK this year. Much of it has accounted for online spending. The latest report on Internet usage shows the number of adults logging on at home has risen from 10 million in October last year to 15.5m this month. The report by Continental Research, which has monitored Internet access in the UK for the past six years, found that while online shopping used to be experimental it is now becoming habitual, especially for women. Colin Shaddick, who heads the company, said, "Women are logging on in record numbers ---online shopping has certainly played a big role in this." The study found that average annual spending online is ?700 a year for each Internet shopper. The draw of the Internet is especially strong for collectors. Business lecturer Stephen Hall, who has been buying and selling books since he was a child, now has a collection worth ?40,000. He is passionate about the opportunities offered by shopping online. "You can find a book in minutes that you could spend months hunting down at auctions or 7 second-hand bookshops," he said. "It can easily become addictive, and all the collectors I know use the Internet. I suspect you do waste money because you are less likely to send back a book to Little Rock, Arkansas, than take it back to the high-street shop." Like Stephen Hall, most of us can shop online sensibly---but for some it provides an easy, anonymous and accessible way to feed their habit. It also provides secrecy---a central part of any addiction. Dr Samantha Haslett, a psychologist and expert in addiction at the Promos counseling centre, said, "It's compulsive in the same way as alcohol and gambling, and addicts find themselves completely unable to stop themselves, despite debt mounting and relationships breaking up. It's the thrill and the buzz of purchasing that ignores all the negative consequences." People laugh at shopping addictions, but it's the same as food overeating: bulimics don't eat nice stuff, or things that are good for them. Shopping addicts are the same: they'll buy things they don't need or want or like. What they're buying is of no importance compared to the thrill they get spending money and acquiring something new. counseled people who have bought piles of bed linen and curtains and just I've left them piled up in the corner of the room. I have seen people's marriages ruined. There's something more damaging about Internet shopping too because it takes place in the home, so the trick and secrecy is that much closer to the partner who is being tricked. Tennis star Serena Williams this year admitted to kicking an Internet shopping addiction that saw her spending up to six hours a day online in an attempt to avoid being seen out in public. "Every day I was in my room and I was online," Williams said. "I wasn't able to stop and I bought, bought, bought. I was just out of control." Confidence is also growing in online security. Danny Meadows-Klue, chairman of Interactive Advertising Bureau, the Internet commercial watchdog, said, "Online card fraud(欺诈)is a drop in the ocean compared to total credit card fraud, but it is increasing. We want to increase consumer confidence by encouraging shoppers to take simple steps to protect themselves." But there are still barriers to online shopping, declares James Goudie, a consumer psychologist at North Umbria University. "For certain items some people prefer to shop personally, for example to try on an item of clothing and feel the quality. Payment of delivery charges is also off-putting." 70. The underlined word “off-putting” in the last passage means_______. A. pleasant B. annoying C. exciting D. tense 71. According to Dr. Samantha Haslett, we can draw a conclusion that_______. A. spending money by clicking the mouse can satisfy customers’ desire greatly B. it is the convenience of Internet that brings about people’s shopping addiction C. a great many things women purchase on the Internet are of little practical use D.the main reason for ruining people’s marriage contributes to shopping online 72.Which of the following do you think the author would most probably agree with? A. paying by credit can account for the phenomenon of online shopping. B. many items are piled up in the room corner because they are out of date. 8 C. shopping addiction is harder to be removed than alcohol and gambling. D. Shopping online has advanced the consumers’ debt increase in a way. 73. It can be learned from the passage that_______. A. people have run into debts mainly because of their Internet shopping addiction B. avoiding been noticed by the public entirely leads to Serena’s shopping addiction C. many people don’t tend to get back their refund though the goods quality is poor D. the reason for online shopping results from much less credit fraud on the Internet 74. Which do you think can be the best title of the passage? A. Net Shopping Hooks Army of Addicts B. Warm Tips on Internet Shopping C. Net Shopping Cost People Much Money D. Shopping Online Is Very Popular D When I heard the piano, I walked to Mrs. Windsor’s house and waited outside as I always did. That meant she was working with another student, and I was not supposed to bother them by ringing the bell. I stood against the wall and daydreamed what I’d rather be doing. “Almost anything”, I sighed dejectedly. I had been tutored enough to read, understand, and even write some musical compositions, but I just didn’t have a gift for it. It didn’t come to me naturally. I thought back to happier times when I was writing stories and acting them out with my friends, cutting up old clothes to make dresses that performers wear in plays, and building scenery out of old things we found. But Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lessons for free, so I felt my duty to try. The door opened and Wendy Barton came out. I walked in, sat down on the piano bench and began to sort through my sheet music. “What piece do you like best?” she asked. “What do you mean?” I asked. “They’re all the same to me. I don’t know.” “Hello,” I heard a voice behind me say softly. I turned around to see a little girl standing behind me, eating an apple. But before I could make any response, Mrs. Windsor walked into the room in her usual urgent manner and announced, “Jennifer, this is my niece, Pasha. Pasha, this is Jennifer. Pasha will be giving you your lesson today. I’m up to my ears in something else!” she then exited to the kitchen. Pasha set her apple down on the side table and slid beside me on the piano bench. “What piece do you like best?”She asked. “What do you mean?” I asked, “ They’re all the same to me. I don’t know.” “You mean you don’t have a favorite?” “No, not really.” Pasha looked at me, rather puzzled, then opened my sheet music to the beginning page and asked me to play. I arranged my fingers on the keys and studied the notes on the page for a moment. Then I frowned and concentrated to make the notes on the page match the finger movements. I have to admit I was a rather mechanical pianist. After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. There was a long pause. “What are you hearing in the music?” I looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn’t know what she meant. 9 “Like a story. What story is being playing out within the music?” “I guess I’ve never thought about it before. I don’t know.” “Here, let me try and you listen,” Pasha advised. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play. “See, it begins here beside some kind of river. Hear the water flowing beside you?” Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys. “Now the princess appears and she’s picking flowers from the water’s edge.” A carefree, happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha’s dancing fingers. “Oh, but she slips!” The music changed. “And our princess is being carried off by the fast-flowing stream. Quickly, the princess’s horse sees her plight (困境),” Pasha continued, and races to the river’s edge where he swims out to let her catch hold of him. They make it to the bank and she hugs her faithful horse and swears she will never again wear princess skirts that weigh her down. She will only wear jeans and T-shirt from now on.” Pasha finished with a big smile and then looked at me. “Aren’t you the girl who tells the stories?” she asked. “I guess. I do tell a lot of stories.” “Oh, yes! All the kids talk about them. I’ve heard about you. Well, all you have to do is learn to hear the stories in the music. That’s all there is to it.” “I’ve never thought it that way.” “Let’s try another one, shall we?” Pasha smiled and together we played that afternoon, finding the stories in the music and learning that sometimes it takes a friend to pull you out of the river onto dry land again. 75. Jennifer got lost in thought when she ________. A. remembered happier times of writing stories and acting them out B. listened to Pasha tell her story about the princess C. played the piano with Pasha for the first time D. discovered that Mrs. Windsor’s niece would be giving the piano lesson 76.The underlined word “dejectedly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _______. Which of the following can best describe Pasha? A. Humorous B. Naughty C. Creative D. Brave 79. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Never Give up B. A Piano Lesson C. Why I Hated Playing the Piano D. A Friend for Ever 80. This text would be probably found in ______. A. a magazine series about the challenges of overcoming fears B. a book of daily records about famous young musicians 10 C. a collection of stories about friendship and learning D. a series of newspaper articles about musical instruments Questions: A. What advice can you give a young person how to be a filmmaker or a writer? B. What would you say to teens who are suffering from depression? C. Do you have any solutions for teens’ writing difficulty? D. Do you have any advice to offer others wishing to become a writer and doctor? E. After all these years in the limelight, how do you deal with critics? F. Do you have any suggestions for someone interested in your job? 81.______________________ __________________________ George Lucas’ answer Well, I would say you have to be persistent first of all, because it’s a very hard thing to get into, and it’s very hard to make it because the odds are against you. So you have to really love it; kids who get into it because they think they’re going to make a lot of money or be famous or tell a lot of people what to do all the time will never make it. But if you’re obsessed with film and you love to tell stories and you love writing in that medium, then that will give you the strength to be persistent and make it happen. 82.________________ __________________________ Tom Fontana’s answer I’ve never had writer’s block. I’m trying my luck because I’m hoping never to have it. As far as suggestions, I don’t know. If you write at the same time every day, your brain and your heart will be there, ready to go to work. It’s like how you eat at the same time over the course of the day – you should be available to write at the same time every day. If you have nothing to write, you should still write. Whether you write your name 100 times or describe a banana. If you write for five minutes, and you just get the words down, at least you’re doing something. 83. __________________ __________________________ Drew Barrymore’s answer I would just say to persevere and find people who are safe and honest and who will give you tough love and guide you through, because you really can’t do everything on your own. You need love and support around you, and to believe that you will get past these hard times. You will overcome. Things will get better. Life is a series of ups and downs, and the good news is that when you’re in a low, it will always go up again. Life is not a free journey. There are a lot of lessons you have to learn along the way, but just appreciate the gift of it and find people who will be honest with you. 84.________________ ____________________________ Richard Seltzer’s answer Become a doctor first because a writer doesn’t make a living – you have to support 11 yourself and your family. But writing is a very individual thing. It’s like your fingerprint – on one else has exactly your style. A lucky writer will discover his or her style but an unlucky one will always be trying to force himself into an unnatural writing style. It’s uncomfortable, and for them, writing is painful. I’ve never suffered. My life has been a series of small, everyday events.
