He thought his book would change society, but he didn?t bring it off. She likes to read novels with happy endings. Your latest book amused me no end. Some people have compared books to friends. They?re selling like hot cakes. As is well known, books teach us to learn life, truth, science and many other useful things. They increase our knowledge, broaden our minds and strengthen our character. In other words, they are our good teachers and wise friends. This is the reason why our parents always encourage us to read more books. Reading is a good thing, but we must pay great attention to the choice of books. Bad books contain evil thoughts. In them, there might be much description about violence, superstition, and *. Before we encourage our children to read books, we should teach and help them to identify good and bad books. Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability. Listen to yourself. 2. Slow down! 20 3. Picture it... 4. Get physical! 5. Watch yourself. 6. Copy the experts. 21 7. Practice makes perfect. 8. Find a language buddy. 9. Be poetic. 10. Sing a song! 类型 direction 导演,production 制片,adaptation 改编,scenario, screenplay, script 编剧,scene 场景,exterior 外景,lighting 灯光,shooting 摄制,to shoot 拍摄,special effects 特技,slow motion 慢镜头,editing, cutting 剪接,montage 剪辑,recording, sound, recording 录音,dubbing 配音,studio 制片厂,摄影棚,(motion)film studio 电影制片厂,set, stage, floor 场地,properties, props 道具,scenery 布景, script 剧本, movie-land (美国California州南部等的)影业集中地区,movie-goer (常)看电影的人 电影类型词汇: 23 film, motion picture 影片,电影 (美作:movie),filmdom 电影界,moviedom 电影界 literary film 文艺片,musicals 音乐片,newsreel 新闻片,纪录片 documentary (film) 记录片,文献片,comedy 喜剧片,tragedy 悲剧片,horror film, dracula movie 恐怖片,swordsmen film 武侠片,action 动作片,detective film 侦探片,ethical film 伦理片,affectional film 爱情片,erotic film 黄色片,western movies 西部片, serial 系列片,dubbed film译制片,trailer 预告片,propaganda film宣传片,animated, cartoon (movie)动画片,science fiction科幻片,costume piece /play古装戏, war movie战争片 footage 影片长度,full-length film, feature film 长片,short(film) 短片,colour film 彩色片 (美作:color film),silent film无声片, silent cinema, silent films 无声电影,sound motion picture, talkie 有声电影 有关演员词汇: cast 阵容,director 导演,film star, movie star 电影明星,film actor 男电影明星,film actress 女电影明星, 24 star, lead 主角,double, stand-in 替身演员,stunt man 特技替身演员,extra, walker-on 临时演员, support 配角,util 跑龙套,extra 特别客串,costume designer (影剧)服装员,makeup girl化妆师,dialogue writer对白作者,script writer剧本作者 一些女演员: Angelina Jolie安吉丽娜? 贝鲁奇,Jodie Foster, Kristen Dunst, Sandra Bullock, Zhang Ziyi章子怡,Michelle Yeoh杨紫琼,Maggie Cheung张曼玉 一些男演员: Brad Pitt, Nichols Cage, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Morgan Freeman, Will Smith, Bruce Wills, Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Fat Chou(Chou Yun Fat周润发),Jet Lee(李连杰), Samuel L. Through effect-making, you can fully see the flood in the movie as if it happened near you. 31 Some scenes in the films are so destructive that it is impossible for the directors to put them into reality. To provide the audience with equivalent shock, they resort to special effects. Some people enjoy seeing movies in the cinema because they like the incredible video effect or great audio effect. Professional facilities or equipment make them enjoy high-quality films. Americans films are mainly good at marvelous scene or touching/ impressive background music, while Chinese films prefer to show what the real life looks like in the society. There is a large investment for American films, and there are a lot of big scenes for American films. However, Chinese films are likely to be instructive, and 32 directors hope that audience can learn something after watching the films. His looks are always funny( 他的样子总是滑稽可笑。 Many of the first films were slapstick comedy. This movie was all blood and guts. This film contains raw language(粗口,脏话). Harry Potter: Harry has a distant goal to get to, he has enormous numbers of obstacles placed in front of his and monsters who he has to face, and challenge and overcome and bewitchments which he has to resist, and all the time, pressing onward towards his goal. It takes time for a movie to be earning the label "timeless." Forrest Gump This is a modern day fairy tale demonstrating that love, dignity and perseverance conquer all. “Forrest Gump”runs the viewer through the entire spectrum of emotions as it tells the story of a slow thinking innocent kid traversing through five decades of life. Toy Story Disney began making quality family shows again in the 1980s. A quality family show is one where the parents can enjoy it as much as the kids. "Toy Story" took it one 34 step further and added state of the art technology to provide a wonderful Disney story. We all have wondered if our toys came alive, but we never knew that there would be so much team work. Another genre that had been unsuccessful for years was the slapstick comedy. This story, Home Alone, about a little boy protecting his home from bumbling crooks had all of the right ingredients; good vs. bad, youth vs. age, and brain vs. brawn. The Rube Goldberg like contraptions coupled with the comedic talents of Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci provide an entertainment that had almost become a lost art form. The film, Dances With Wolves, was able to break the trend and deliver a compelling historical drama about life with the Sioux Indians. The buffalo hunt is spectacular and demonstrates the vastness and beauty of the country. E. T. was directed by Steven Spielberg. 《E. The film is set in Britain at the end of the nineteenth century. It is still too early to tell what movies will become classics and what movies will become dated. I?ve been in my movie business almost all my life. Chinese martial art comes together with Hollywood. This film is rated G. That movie had me on the edge of my seat. That love story was too melodramatic. A lousy movie cannot fool the audience. 36 I may feel different about any of these movies two years from now. There are films revealing more social problems, such as racial or * discriminations, government corruption, the true color of so-called higher class. They make me more mature after watching them. Those comedies, love stories and adventures are either na?ve or unrealistic. I usually watch films through TV or VCD, DVD in my home. Just like romance and comedy movie, a violent film relaxes and entertains millions movie fans. However uniqueness of violent movie is that it may have negative impact on people, particularly young audience. For certain segment of audience, it may be harmful if being viewed without proper guidance and control. There have been cases of crime in which offenders, when surveyed, revealed that they got the idea to commit a crime from violent movie. 37 We need to control access of violent movies to people under certain age and offer guidance to young viewers. What's the main difference between modern films and those in the past? Okay, I think that modern films are less serious, um, because there is more comedy in these films. I would say, uh, hmm, that modern films are more relaxed. To begin, modern films are much more expensive to make and they have famous actors in them. There is also, uh, a lot of slang and violence and other cultural attributes in these pictures. As for the more classical pictures, they are classy and the actors and actresses dress more conservatively and there spoken, uh, English is more classic and proper. Older films teach values that all humans should have whereas, hmm, the newer films are just sometimes more about making money and people famous. In my opinion, I like the newer films better because, uh, overall they are just much more entertaining and the hmm, the older films are maybe, I guess, more about art and teaching. 38 All About Eve?1950 彗星美 附:美国名片片名 人 Casablanca?1943 北非谍 影;喀桑布兰卡 Chinatown?1974 唐人街; 中国城 The Godfather?1972 教父 第一集 One Flew Over the Cuckoo?s Nest?1975飞越疯Gone with the Wind?1939 人院 乱世佳人;飘 2001: A Space The wizard of Oz?1939 绿 Odyssey?1968 2001太空漫野仙踪 游 The Graduate?1967 毕业 E.T. Mister Bush says that when he was a boy he wanted to grow up to be a baseball player. He said the game taught him to develop a strong resistance against critics. He said it also taught him to rise above minor problems and work instead on long-term goals. If our bodies are not strong, our spirit to do things will certainly be quite dull. Diseases will only attack the weak, but not the strong. Exercise helps us (to) strengthen our bodies and avoid 50 disease. So I believe that the corresponding training like aerobics and yoga gets superheated. 51 Health is the best treasure (which) a man can possess. Money can do many things, but it cannot buy happiness. However, so long as man has good health, he can enjoy the pleasures of human life. In order to insure good health we must pay attention to three things. They are—nourishing food, fresh air and proper exercise. Physical fitness and exercise are important for good physical and mental health. Exercise helps a person develop and maintain a strong self-image and a sense of emotional balance. As a person gets older, exercise becomes more important because after age 30 the heart?s blood pumping capacity declines at a rate of about 8 percent each decade. Exercise is also important for children. Vigorous physical activity helps a child?s overall development. 52 Research shows that exercise can reduce the gathering of cholesterol on artery walls of children and adults. Too much cholesterol can increase the risk of heart disease. There is, however, no evidence that exercise prolongs life. Former athletes do not live longer than nonathletes, nor are they saved from heart disease. The benefits of exercise cannot be kept for more than a few months or years without continued exercise. Even Olympic-level athletes will go back rapidly to pre-training levels once they stop exercise. The amount of activity necessary for fitness varies from person to person. Age, physical structure, health, and gender are important factors. Soccer becomes part of European culture. To meet the fans in the stands at football games across Europe. They wear face paint, shout at the teams they love or hate and go crazy when talking about the players they think truly stink. In Europe, soccer has so long a history that it has 53 become part of the culture. But each European country has its own “football culture”. Britain: British football is not necessarily the best in the world, but its football marketing is no doubt the most successful of all European counties. The English Premier League draws global television audiences, and Michael Owen and David Beckham have become worldwide superstars. Part of the reason comes from Briton?s love of the sports. Many British football fans enjoy gathering in pubs to talk about their favorite teams and players and to watch games together. The Winchester Hall Tavern in London is one of the most famous football pubs in Britain. The large old Victorian pub is equipped with five TVs and a big screen. It?s so large that it never gets packed. Partly due to the excessive drinking in the pubs, Britain also produces some infamous hooligans, who have become an increasing headache for police offices in Europe. Germany: According to 1996 report to the European 54 parliament, German fans tend to come from the middle class of society, and can be divided into three broad types. The “consumer-oriented” fan will sit in the stands or seek a quite spot on the terraces and just wants to see good games. The “football-oriented” fan dressed in his team?s colours and badges, is a member of the supporter?s club, stands on the terraces and supports his club through thick and thin. The “adventure-oriented” fan will change his spot on the terraces from game to game and wants to see something happen, whether it has anything to do with football or not. Italy: Football culture is an extended form of town . France: Football in France has never attracted the numbers of live spectators, or inspired such passionate support, as in other European countries. Despite the current popularity of the sport, even major cities cannot have more than one team, and matches attract on average only a third of the spectators of their equivalents in Italy, England and Spain. 55 The interest has increased largely due to the successes of French teams in international competition and accompanying large scale investment in the “promotion” of football. The revival of popular interest in football and the increase in attendance at football matches have led to a diverse group of fans. The majority of spectators are both from the working class and the middle class. Some have even described the fans in French as: “with the exception of the upper classes, all of society is found in the stadium”. Football craze In recent years more and more people have been drawn to football. Football fan clubs and associations have been set up across the country. In fact, football is becoming such a focus of interest that even football fans are becoming celebrities. Football fans, form a special informal social group and their emergence “boils down to people?s desire to belong to something”. Football satisfies this desire of belonging, as fans can 56 organize themselves into groups to support a team through good times and bad. The reason that football had become so popular was that anyone could be a supporter. You do not have to take exams to be supporter; you even don?t have to be able to play football. The competitive nation of the game gives fans a sense that they are part of a special social group. With its fierce rivalry and mass participation, football is unique. It is the world?s No. One sport. The huge size of the field also gives a chance for the players to be creative and for the spectators to look on in awe. People can express themselves through football. And it?s quite easy to learn and play the sport: you need only a ball. Whilst in European counties people have always been aware of football?s power to make supporters react in such an intense and passionate way, this was the first time for the Chinese public to see such a response. The May 19 incident ironically had the effect of drawing more fans to the games rather than turning them away. 57 The response contrasted to May 19, 1985, when after hearing that China had failed to get into the World Cup finals, fans went on a rampage and started burning cars and causing fires on the streets of Beijing. "One world, One Dream"—Slogan of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games "One World, One Dream," is an embodiment of the wisdom of hundreds of thousands of people. It expresses the firm belief of a great nation, with a long history of 5,000 years and on its way towards modernization, that is committed to peaceful development, a harmonious society and people?s happiness. The slogan is simple, meaningful, inspiring, and easy to remember, read and spread. The Olympic Games are unique in their ability to attract the world?s attention, using sport to promote peace and understanding. Describe the most beautiful natural scenery you have ever seen. What it is specific about Where you see it Who you go with And explain why you think it is the most beautiful What measures does your government take to protect natural scenery,Do you think it is effective, What role does tourism play in your country?s economy,What should you pay attention to in travel, TV Programme I seldom watch TV, because I have a computer and most of my free time is spent in front of the computer browsing the websites and chatting with my friends. Anyhow, I do have a favourite TV program and it?s called “Happy Dictionary”. It?s a quiz show. In this program a wide range of prizes is given to the winners. The host of this program is my favourite her name is “Wang Xiao Ya”. She is an incredible host. In the beginning of the program they will introduce the 5 participants and then they will be asked a question, the person who answers the question correctly and quickly will be given an opportunity to take the quiz, the quiz is divided in to three or four stages, I can?t remember this exactly right now, anyway in each stage you will get a prize. The prizes are decided by participants, e.g. a computer, laptop, digital video camera, a free package holiday, you know things like 61 that. There are there questions in each stage, and the way the host asks these questions make them more difficult. For example after you have given an answer she will ask you are you sure or not, and the person starts getting confused and changes his right answer to a wrong one, its funny and interesting, I really enjoy this part. The participants can get help from others for answering the questions but its limited there are only three ways and if you have used one then you cannot use it again these three ways are calling a friend by phone, asking the audience and letting the computer erase one of the wrong answer. The entire questions are multiple choices. This program is an hour long and is usually broadcasted at 9:00 PM. My father was one of their four children, and my mother has a brother, so I have a number of uncles and aunts and many cousins. 32. What do you think of the One-Child Policy in China? ( 5 - 6 ) That?s a tough question. I think we have to have the policy in China. Our population had been growing to rapidly and something drastic had to be done. Besides, 104 the policy will give China a chance to move ahead in the world. What I mean to say is that as soon as the population growth has stabilized, China will be able to make progress in the fight against unemployment. 32. What do you think of the One-Child Policy in China? ( 7 - 8 ) That?s a controversial question in China. In my opinion, the policy has both merits and shortcomings. The policy is one of the most effective tools to solve the increasing problem of overpopulation in the country. On the other hand, the One-Child Policy has been extremely harsh on the people. It violates basic human rights. For example, it deprives women of their fertility rights. 33. Why do people in China traditionally want to have a son? ( 5 - 8 ) That?s an interesting question. I believe the most important reason lies in fathers. They want their children to carry their name into the future. Only sons can fulfill the task. For example, in many western countries it is customary for a boy to receive his grandfather?s name. A second reason that I could 105 mention is that parents worry about what will happen to them after they retired. They feel that when they have a son he would be able to provide for them in future. 34. Who does most of the shopping in your family? Who does most of the cooking in your family? ( 5 - 8 ) My mother does most of the cooking, but my father and I will do some cooking from time to time. For example, sometimes when my mother is out the whole day doing voluntary work in our community and then my father and I will do the cooking for her. For example, often on a Friday night none of us feel like 106 cooking, and then we visit one of the local restaurants, and have our favorite dish. 36. How does your family feel about you going abroad? ( 5 - 8 ) They feel very happy about it and give me 100% support. What I mean to say is that it all depends on the couple now. Young people feel that they first want to know each other even better by living together. When they are absolutely sure that they are able to adapt to each other?s lifestyles, they would then most probably decide to get married. 45. Do you think couples should live with their parent or on their own? ( 5 - 8 ) Definitely the latter. There are several reasons as for why I think couples should life on their own. Allow me to explain by mentioning some of them briefly. First, I believe couples should become independent as soon as possible. They should learn how to cope with the money at their disposal. Also, they should be alone as soon as possible. Generation gap can be the trigger for many quarrels between the young and old generations. 46. What responsibilities should a couple take? ( 5 - 8 ) 110 There are several responsibilities that couples should take. In the first place, I believe they should be responsible for their own finances. They have to feed the kid and ensure that he/she gets a good education. c) CHILDREN 47. Are there any traditions around the birth of a baby in your region? ( 5 - 8 ) Yes, there are quite a few. ( 5 - 8 ) That?s an interesting question. What makes I worry most is that my children will have a very tough life. I wonder if they will have work to do since unemployment rate is so high even now. I hope that they will be happy. They will find a good spouse, have children and live together in peace and love, just like the ending of a fairy tale. 50. What type of culture do you want your child to grow up in? ( 5 - 8 ) That?s a broad question. I?d like to mention the following points: first and foremost, I would like my child to grow up in a culture of love. That is, the circumstances in our home will be full of love and understanding. Are you going to bring your children up differently from the way you were brought up? Why? ( 5 - 8 ) No, not really. I believe my parents raised me well and gave me a good education. I would try and keep a balance between discipline and freedom. d) WOMAN 52. Is there any sex discrimination in China? ( 5 - 8 ) 52. Describe the position of woman in China? In addition, in many communities in China, women are still regarded as inferior to men. This is particularly true in the rural areas. Last but not the least, parents prefer 113 to have a boy as opposed to a girl. This is against the nature, as it will upset the balance between men and women in China in the years to come. 53. What are the causes of sex discrimination? ( 5 - 8 ) One of the main reasons regarding this topic that I would like to highlight is the fact that men often determine the wages in the companies. Next, women are not seen as able to do certain jobs as well as men. For instance, construction work has always been seen as a man?s job. Lastly, many men still have the traditional idea that a woman should stay at home, raise the kids and serve her husband. 53. What are the causes of sex discrimination? ( 7 - 8 ) That?s an interesting question. Allow me to explain myself by shortly mentioning the following points: Firstly, I believe that discrimination against woman have deep roots in societies all over the world. In other words, it is not a present day phenomenon. Throughout history woman have not enjoyed the same status as men. It is only recently that woman have been filling the 114 same positions as men in the work place. Lastly, I believe that it will take much more time to eradicate this practice. I owe this good result to good preparation, the teachers' advice and a bit of luck. I was the last one of the total 3 days' oral test, so I have two days and a half to prepare. I stayed in front of the computer and writing and murmuring answers to the questions that previous candidates posted. so almost all the questions the examinar asked had been prepared by me. She was tired, after two and a half days' speaking, and spoke very fast and interrupted almost every response i gave. I spoke fast, too, because i have prepared for all 134 the answers. So it seems the whole test only took 10 minutes also. It does seem pretty short after i have recalled all the course of the conversation. What?s your name? My full name is Zhen Fang Ling. If you don?t mind, you can also call me Lynn. (This is a bit like reciting, and I rushed to say the second sentence, because she was going to interrupt me when I just finished the first sentence.) Are you a student or are you working? I am working as a teacher.(“as a teacher” was almost stopped by her interruption, but she seemed impressed when hearing it.) Have you thought of a change? No… Why not? I enjoyed my work. Although I have taught English for 10 years,11 years actually, my work changed from year 135 to year. I first taught 11 year-olds and then 14 year-olds and now 16 or 17 year-olds. I experience different things every year and I am never bored. Any interesting people you met in your work? Oh, yes. The students are interesting, young people, energetic and creative. I enjoy interacting with them and learn a lot from them. Also, because my school is expanding, we have new teachers coming every year from all over the country, including foreign teachers(er,foreign teachers are not from the country). I like to meet new people and exchange ideas and know different lives and cultures. Now let?s talk about photographs. Do Chinese people like to take photographs? Yes, as more and more people are going traveling, they take pictures of places they visit and keep them for memory…(interrupted) What kind of photographs do you like? You mean photos taken by professional photographers? 136 Yes. Well, I like photographs of people. I like to read the expression, (er..and)the emotion of the people on the picture and know their lives….(interrupted) Do you prefer to buy picture postcards or take photos? Sorry? Do you like to buy picture postcards or take photos? Hm?(confused by the picture and photos, think it means the difference between picture and photos) Do you prefer to buy picture postcards or take photos when you visit places? Oh, I see, one is to buy and the other is to take by myself? Yes. I do both.(er.forgot to say thank you) When I am traveling, and I see beautiful scenery, I take photos. However, when I see pictures taken by professional photographers on sale in the shops, I find mine are not 137 as good as them, I will buy some and post them to my friends…(interrupted) Let?s talk about food. Who cook in your family? I am considered to be lucky, because I live with my parents-in-law. And in China, it?s common that older generation, retired people prepare food for the family….(interrupted) Do you think it?s important for the family to eat together? Oh, yes, I do. Eating together provide an opportunity for the family members to exchange ideas and share each other?s experience. It helps to strengthen the relationship between family members and keep the family close…(interrupted) What kind of food is popular in your culture? Ah... My culture is a diverse one. We have different food in different places, different provinces. For example, I am Cantonese, I like Cantonese food. However, people from Hunan think Cantonese food is 138 tasteless. They prefer Hunan food, spicy food. So it is difficult to choose one particular food that is popular in the whole country. Now I will give you a topic. You will talk about it for one to two minutes. So don?t worry if I stop you. You will have one minute to prepare for it. You can make notes if you like. Here is the card. Thanks. Recently I saw a movie on line. It?s called Saving face, directed by a Chinese-American director called ….Alex Wu, cast by(er. Casting)a group of Chinese-American actors and actresses, including one of my favorite actresses Joan Chen, who immigrated to the United States in the 1980s. That mean when I was a little kid, I saw movies of hers. This movie is about a Chinese mother and an American daughter, who has grown up with her grandparents in the United States. It shows how the mother gets along with her daughter, how to cope with her new American life and how she handles her own emotional problems. At the end of the movie, 139 the mother and the daughter finally understand each other. The mother accepted the fact that her daughter is lesbian. And the daughter also encourages her mother to accept a marriage with(to) a young man—she married a man who is almost 20 years younger than her. This movie shows….(interrupted) Do you want to see the movie again? No, I don?t think so, because I saw the movie on line, and I was able to repeat it again and again. I think I have known the movie enough and there is no need to…. Have you told anybody about the film? No…oh yes, I talked about it to a friend of mine when we were chatting on line… What is the status of film making in your country? Oh, it is becoming increasingly important. There is a big market for it in the country and many companies are investing in the film industry…(interrupted) What is the status of actresses and actors in your country? 140 Well…opinions vary. Young people admire movie stars, the glamour, trend, fashion..They see them as heroes. However, older people have negative opinions towards them. To them, many movie stars have problems. Some of them have drug problems, divorces….they don?t like them at all….(interrupted) How do movies influence people? The content, the content of a movie have influences on people. For example, if a movie is about how people persevere to succeed. Young people may be inspired and motivated to seek success after they see it….(interrupted) How do you see the educational value in films and that in reading? Well, you think when you read, so . However, when you see a movie, movies are full of plots, some are really exciting. You can?t really think when you watch them. You might think after you watch the movie, but not during watching it. So I think reading has more educational value than seeing films. 141 How does seeing films help with learning languages? Oh, it helps a lot in learning languages, because learning a language is a process of imitating.. When students are seeing a film, he is imitating the expressions, the pronunciation and the vocaburary. Most important of all, they enjoy it! I use that a lot in my class.... Isn?t it a bit passive? Oh, yeah,it is a bit. That?s why we don?t do that often in ….ah serious class time. We do that at weekends when students are relaxing…(interrupted) How do you plan a lesson with films? I will…First, I will tell them that we are going to show a movie and then ask them to guess what the content is .Then we show the movie, after seeing it, we?ll discuss about it to see who has guessed right. And if we have more time for it, we usually pick one scene for the students to act. Or sometimes we pick several scenes and different groups of students act them. We put them together and we have a movie of our own… 142 Bascially, if your occupation is a english teacher and on this work have worked for 10years, you totally should attain a score 8 in speaking part, even in all parts. I am sure ielts are all about preparation. I heard many english majors fail this test. And i am sure if your pronuciation is good and have good preparation, you can possibly get an 8. Conversely, even you can speak great english but don't prepare enough and don't obey the rules, there is a good chance you fail. When i was doing the simulate test with a scottish teacher, he pointed out my weakness mercilessly. I gave 143 him short answers all the time in the first part and spoke incoherently in the second. Interrupted by him in the two parts many times, i started to use long sensentences and bigger words in the last part. ONly until then he was a bit satisfied with my performance. He said, " your English has no problem, your accent is excellent. However( we are not allowed to use but), if you do like the first part and second part, 5 or 6." I believe him. He knew i was an English teacher, still, he didn't think i can naturally get a high score. Looking back to the whole conversation, i guess the examinar went through the time quite comfortably. She has been working for almost 3 days, and was too tired to struggle a conversation with a candidate. She read from the paper and spoke extremely fast. I did the same and kept speaking at length. Although i did make her repeat one question 3 times, it didn't affect much. Also, one thing i worried after the exam is that she could clearly tell that i have prepared. And some people say that will be bad. Now, you know there is never too 144 much preparation for ielts. Just prepare, as long as you don't recite looking at the ceiling, it is fine. 7.如果碰到自己很难回答的问题,就不要正面回答,比如你可以说:i don't have many ideas about this but in my mind, there may be... or i guess...但千万不要说 i don't know. GO OUT,DID U GO OUT LAST NITE,意思就是你有没有去CLUBING。喝醉了,可以用:PISSED,(注意PISSED OFF, 是生气的意思,要分开),ALED UP,程度更深可以说:WASTED,自嘲丑态可以说:I WAS FUCKED, CLUB人太多,PACKED,不好,CRAP,第二天头晕可以用: HANG OVER 有人说话做事夸张,或者没必要:可以说,DON?T MAKE TWO BITES AT A CHERRY 对伦敦人的称呼:COCKNEY(s)表示不相信 :I DON'T ADAM AND EVE IT~形容太爱自我吹嘘的人: ALL MOUTH AND NO TROUSERS 很令人满意的: AS RIGHT AS RAIN 表示对一事情的关注: KEEP ONE„S FINGERS CROSS 二、雅思口语原则 第一阶段(介绍) 须 知.... Good morning. People often mistake my aunt for my mum. They both have the same pointed nose and high cheekbones. When I last saw my brother, he was a lanky eighteen-year-old with scruffy, long hair and a thin moustache that looked silly. He was shy. But now, I?ve just returned from two years study in America, he is absolutely gorgeous. He has become a huge guy. He?s broad-shouldered and big-boned. A boy has become a man. My friend Sara has always been a bit chubby. Over long vacations, she 224 ate lots of good food and got depressed because she was really overweight. Don?t expect him to put any money in the collection. He?s much too mean. I can?t believe her boyfriend?s so lazy. He just sits and watches TV all evening. She never thinks about anyone but herself. She can be a bit selfish. 228 I can?t understand why my girlfriend is such a moody girl. One minute life is wonderful and the next minute she?s in her room crying. I really don?t like Bob. He seems to think that he?s more important than anybody else. He certainly can be very arrogant. My uncle can be very amusing. He?s such good fun. He?s got a great sense of humour. Does your name have any special meaning? Well, I am not sure. I guess there is something special about it, but I never asked my grandpa this question. He is the person who gave me my name. Well, I don?t know. It?s just a very common girl name. Actually, I was somewhat annoyed back in high school. People always mistook me for another girl in my class who had exactly the same name. 3. Why do some people change their name? To be frank, I don?t know why but I can only assume that they are not very happy with their names given by others. They want to be in control of 233 everything in their life. 12. What are the advantages of studying instead of working? When studying, I only had to worry about my exams. But now, I have to worry about my unpaid bills, my mortgage and my children?s exams. 19. Do you agree that there should be a world language for everyone? Yeah, I can?t agree more. I really feel it?s a huge waste of time to learn a second language from other country when we can work out a way for everyone to speak the same language. I think Esperanto is a great idea. 21. Do you agree that people will get married even later in the future? Why? I strongly feel that people are on the way to that, but it?s 234 difficult to explain the reason. Maybe it?s probably the increasing geographic mobility that makes we feel we have more choices when it comes to dating and marrying, so we keep thinking we can find someone better than we have. Yes, I believe so. Personally, I think people marry later partially because of a decline in the belief of a firm and long-term commitment. What?s more, living together without getting married is no longer considered disgraceful by young people, so the question for them is “why should we get married if we can live together without a wedding?” 49. Do you have brothers or sisters? No. I don?t have brothers or sisters. Actually, I am the only child in my family. You know, most of the people about my age are the only child in their family, 235 which is mainly due to the birth control policy in China. 55. Do you prefer to live in a small family or in a large family? Well, I don?t really care whether it?s large or small, as long as I stay with my beloved family. Just as the saying goes, “You don?t choose your family. That?s the God?s gift to you, as you are to them.” It?s true that people living in a smaller family enjoy more mobility and independence, but if I get to choose, I would prefer a large family with relatives caring for, loving and supporting each other, which I think is more important to me. 60. Do you live in a flat or a house? Well, I live in a flat. It?s a kind of old building which has been converted into a six-floor flat house. And I live on the third floor. 236 64. Can you describe the community you live? I moved to my new apartment only about a year ago. My community is a relatively new residential area with several high-rises around. To be frank, I don?t even know my next-door neighbor. It seems that people all keep to themselves, which is not what I like about my community. 70. Why are holidays important to you? Having a holiday is taking a break. During holidays I can do something I really I want to do, say reading a book I didn?t finish 2 years ago or hanging around with friends to catch up things. 87. How has housework changed in your family in the past few years? Obviously, household chores are no longer for women exclusively. Men are increasingly aware of the significance of sharing housework 237 with their wives, which is beneficial for the family harmony. 88. What’s your favorite sport? I?m very into basketball, you know. I?m a huge fan of Michael Jordon. Playing basketball is a lot of fun. For example, you get to meet new friends. 89. Why is exercise good for you? It is without doubt that doing exercise can be very rewarding. It helps to control body weight, maintain strength and improve immunity. What?s more, doing exercise helps to develop co-ordination and team spirit. 99. Why do you think some people are very into extreme sports? I think the fear that drives many people away from the risks of extreme sports may be the same ingredient that keeps others coming back 238 for more. For some, life is all about adventures, risks and challenges. 106. Can we learn more from television or from books? Both are educational, I believe. Television appeals to young teenagers more, whereas books are attracted to older people. Personally, I?m more into reading. Just like what people say, “if you read a lot of books, you?re considered well-read; but if you watch a lot of TV, you?re not considered well-viewed. 121. What do you think are healthy foods? Vegetables, of course. All vegetables are naturally low in fat and full of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Actually, vegetables are a must on my diet. To be frank, I don?t really see the point of arranging foods into a “healthy food” class or an “unhealthy food” class. What we should realize is that it is our 239 choice of food and our eating habit that really matters. So I feel it is really unfair to describe pizza, chips and ice cream as junk food. Without them, eating seems to be less fun. 123. Can you consider why fast food restaurants in your town are popular? It?s true that fast food restaurants like KFC and McDonald?s are very popular here. They can be found on almost all high streets. I guess people are always ready to try some exotic foods from other countries. And these western fast food restaurants are clean, casual and comfortable, which have become fashionable social bases. 131. Can you consider the difference between men and women in their shopping habits? 240 Concerning shopping, I think men and women hold distinct attitude. For men, shopping happens when their socks wear out. However, women shop even if the wardrobes are full. Apparently, women?s desire to shop is endless and this is something men can never understand. 139. Is it helpful to teach music courses in high school? Certainly. It makes a good compensation for other courses like math and physics, which I think are very dull and boring. Singing together with my schoolmates is much more fun. 140. Are there any negative effects if children are taught to play a musical instrument? Well, it is hard to say. Personally, I believe that it is undoubtedly of great benefit to a child?s musical development. However, some 241 children who are forced by their parents to play a musical instrument don?t really think so. I guess they have their reasons. 149. How do the old people look at young people fashion? If you ask me, though I haven?t hit 50, I think a daringly fashionable miniskirt is always considered dangerously inappropriate by old people. But I can see why they have strong reaction. Once you hit 50, it is time to think twice about miniskirts. 151. What do you think of the fashion today? “Unexplainable” is the only word for me to explain fashion. But I do feel there are many people strongly influenced by it, otherwise there won?t be so many fashion victims walking on the streets, who wear 242 unreasonably expensive clothes but look perfectly ridiculous. 164. In what ways has tourism changed your country? I?m not so sure but by attracting more foreign visitors, tourism helps to boost economy and create more jobs. At the same time, in order to enhance the city?s image, the government pays more attention to the renovation and maintenance of the infrastructure. So tourism benefits not only individuals but a country as well. 168. What is the public transport like your town? I reckon the choices of public transport are sufficient here in the town. There are taxi, bus and subway which is a relatively newcomer. However, like most of the other big cities, traffic congestion was and is a serious problem. Now with 243 the government?s urge to revitalize automobile industry, the number of private cars is dramatically increasing, which makes the present problem even worse. 169. How do you think it could be improved? This is a question needing quite some consideration. As far as I?m concerned, what sounds more feasible at the moment is to discourage private car driving but to schedule more public transport like buses. 184. Can you consider any negative effects watching TV might cause? Undoubtedly, TV entertains people. However, TV violence is what worries parents most. In order to attract and hold audiences, TV violence has become so graphic that children may be more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways towards others. The effects of television seem to be more intensive on 244 younger viewers. The more time children spend watching TV, the less time they are spending doing other important activities like reading, getting exercise, being outdoors and talking with families. Consequently children have such problems like lower reading scores, obesity and poor physical fitness. 190. Do you think festivals are important for a country? Yes, I think so. Every country has traditional festivals. These festivals, apart from its religious importance, also help in creating social, cultural and emotional bonds among people. Besides, people get to have holidays during big festivals like Chinese New Year. 192. How do you compare the Chinese festivals with 245 the western festivals? As far as I know, western festivals are counted according to solar calendar, whereas Chinese festivals use lunar calendar. That?s why Chinese New Year is not the first day of the year on solar calendar. One another difference is that Chinese festivals are not as religious as the western ones. 196. Do you agree that weather could affect people’s mood or personality? I think so. From what I read in the book, when we are exposed to sunlight, our body makes lots of Vitamin, which produce a substance in the brain to affect our mood. If we don?t have enough of this substance, we can become depressed. I guess certain amount of sunbath makes us happier. 201. How do you usually make friends? 246 Frankly speaking, I?m not the sort of person who always takes the initiative to say hi to a total stranger. So most of my high school and college friends are either my next seat fellow or dorm mate. It is the geography that makes people and me much closer. 203. Do you think friends are important to your life? Certainly. Friends are not only those who we have fun with; they are the people we turn to for help. Besides, our relationships with friends partially determine our preferences, attitudes and values. Friends always share something in common. 206. What is the relationship between colors and personality? I firmly believe that different personality types are influenced by different shades of colors. I think those outgoing and enthusiastic 247 people prefer warm colors like yellow, peach and beige. For those sensitive and shy people, blue and purple are their favorites. 248 PART TWO Sample Answers (These sample answers are for your reference only.) Describe a person you like most in your family. Describe a family member you are close to. Describe a person who is similar to you in your family. Describe a person you admire. The person I like most in my family is my mother. My mum is a petite woman with short wavy hair. She is in her mid 40s but still looks quite young for her age. My mum works in a primary school. She teaches Chinese. She is very patient and gentle so the children in the school love her and so do the neighbor kids. When staying with young children, my mum always looks young and passionate. People all say that I look like my mum more 249 than my father. I have got my mother?s big eyes and high cheekbones. In many ways, we share many interests in common. We both like listening to pop music and watching comedies. On weekends, we often go shopping together. But we are also different. My mum fancies exotic plants and she loves gardening. Our balcony is always green throughout the year. But I have no idea about gardening, no interest at all. To me, my mum sometime is more like a friend. We share many things and do a lot of things together. She is very supportive and encouraging. She always gives me advice on my study and work but she never controls me. She lets me choose my own path in my life. So, yes, my mum is the one I like most in my family. Describe a person you admire. 250 Describe a family member you are close to. The person I admire is my father. My father is a stocky man of average height. He is in his mid fifties. He?s got small eyes and wears a moustache. He is also going a bit thin on top. In fact, he is going bald. My father is not attractive but he is the person who has always provided encouragement and support for my family. He displays strength and toughness but has never failed to express his love for me and my mother. He is very sincere and loyal to his friends and family. He is not a rich man but he has provided well for his family by working hard. My father has made huge sacrifices to save enough money to educate me through university and to buy a good apartment in the city centre. My father lives a small but valuable life. In my mind, he is a great man with many outstanding qualities. 251 Describe your family. I live in a big family. By saying “big”, I mean I live with my parents and grandparents. It?s not common nowadays to live with grandparents but I do enjoy it. My grandparents are very close. From the old pictures, I find that my grandmother was a very enchanting young lady. She and my grandfather get on like a house on fire, a very enviable couple. Looking at my grandfather, my father and me, you can see a strong family likeness there. We?ve all got the same big nose. I take after my father both in looks and character. A real chip off the old block. My mum always says I get my quick temper from my father. My father was a policeman before retirement. He used to be 252 strong and well-built, but now he has put on much weight and looks slightly tubby. Actually my grandparents have four children. My father is the youngest and he has two big brothers and an elder sister. They all live too far away from us so we very rarely see them. But we still gather together on some big holidays. Describe a teacher. My English teacher is about 30 years old. He is tall and thin, slightly tanned with a small brown mole on his left cheek. He?s got short frizzy hair without parting. He has small eyes and wears spectacles. He always wears a friendly smile. He doesn?t have a very appealing face, but he can capture your attention the first time you meet him. He has such great sense of humor and he seems to be able to make any plain words interesting. I 253 still remember a lot of funny jokes he told us in his class. Listening to his lecture is never a disappointment. Describe a person you work with. Describe your boss. I still remember the time I got my first job. My first boss was very impressive. He is a middle-aged man, well-groomed, clean-shaven and looks decent. He wears a pair of glasses. The first time I met him, he appeared to be nice and easy-going. But once I worked for him, I found myself totally wrong about him. Appearance can be really deceptive. He actually was a very tough man. He?s never generous to any mistakes, even to those teeny weenies. He was so unpredictable and unfathomable that you never knew what he was thinking about, which made him more intimidating. Apart from these, 254 he was still a good boss. He was a man with priority in order and I did learn to work efficiently and under pressure. There were some hard times working for him, but you could always feel the push and see your self-improvement. Describe a neighbor. There is a little girl and her parents living next door to my apartment. I got to know this little girl about three months after their moving in. I still remember that day when she found herself locked outside the door after school because she forgot to take keys with her. I invited her to my apartment and then we 255 knew each other. She is 11 years old. She always ties a ponytail with a ribbon on it. She is a lovely chubby girl with big eyes and bushy eyebrows. What she hates most about her face are the freckles all over her cheeks, although I find them really cute. She always complains to me about those brown spots and afraid that she has to wear heavy make-up when she grows up. It?s very funny 31 to listen to an eleven-year-old girl complaining about her appearance, which makes her sound mature for her age. She is very keen on fashion and her dream is to become a fashion designer. Describe a famous person/public figure/celebrity. Describe a person you admire. David Copperfield He is the greatest magician of our time. To me, he is a legend. David Copperfield has redefined magic as a performing art rather 256 than mere visual tricks. His performances are so amazing and so incredible that you cannot even believe your eyes. He vanished an airplane at the witness of astonished viewers. He successfully walked right through the Great Wall. He levitated himself across the Grand Canyon. To him, passion and imagination are everything. Just as he said, “The secret is to consider nothing impossible.” And one another reason why I am such a huge fan of him is that he is undoubtedly handsome. If I could imagine, I really want to know the secrets of his magic. Describe a movie star you like. Describe your favorite actor or actress. Tom Hanks I?m a huge fan of Tom Hanks. He is my favourite actor. The moment I got to know about him was from one of his most successful acting 257 in “Forrest Gump”. In the movie he played one of his best roles as a simple, decent and honest man whose body grew to maturity but remained a child in heart and spirit. Tom?s performance was very impressive. His brilliant acting made the character so convincing and memorable that I sometimes almost believed that Tom was playing himself in this movie. I always had the same feeling each time I enjoyed Tom Hank?s movie, “Philadelphia”, “Sleepless in Seattle”, “Saving Private Ryan”, “You?ve got mail”, “Cast away”, “Band of Brothers”. There is no doubt of his acting ability. And one another reason I am completely taken by him is that he is the epitome of a nice man, a strong willed and determined hero in men?s eyes, a lovable and charming man in women?s eyes. 258 Describe a character in a movie/book. Describe your favourite book. Describe a child you know. Describe your favourite movie. Harry Potter is an ordinary-looking boy, fair skinned, wearing glasses and carrying a strong British accent. He is no different from other boys in the school of Hogwarts. Walking in the crowd, it is even difficult to recognize him. The mark that made him someone not so ordinary is the scar on his forehead. Harry is an intelligent, brave and athletic boy who displays a strong curiosity and determination to uncover some big secrets and mystery behind his parents? death. I've never read a children's book that gripped my imagination or made me emotional so much. It seems to me that the books are 100% interactive - you find yourself smiling, being surprised and irritated, with the characters as you read their breath-taking adventures. Reading, the least-fun activity for many children has been redefined because of this boy. Nowadays, it is very popular for children as well as 259 their parents to read and talk about what happened in the books about Harry. It is amazing, isn?t it? Describe your favorite food. Jiaozi (Chinese Dumpling) I am going to say something about Cihnese dumpling, or Jiaozi in Chinese. Jiaozi (Chinese Dumpling) is a very traditional Chinese Food, which is essential during holidays like Chinese New Year especially in Northern China. It is a very delicious food. You can make a variety of Chinese dumplings using different fillings based on your taste and how various ingredients. Usually when you have Chinese dumpling for dinner, you will not have to cook anything else. The dumpling itself is good enough for dinner. This is one of the advantages of Chinese dumpling over other foods, though it may take longer to make them. 260 Making dumplings is really teamwork. Usually all family members join the work. Someone makes the filling; someone makes the dough and others roll skins. I am very good at rolling skins, which is the trickiest part. It is a lot of fun. Relatives catch up things when they are making dumplings. Children run all around, shouting and playing with each other. Recipes There are several stages. The first one is to make the dough. Put flour on a clear surface in a heap and pour water into it until it makes a flexible dough. Then you have to knead it for a while until it flexible and not too sticky. Then you go to the second stage which is to prepare the filling. It?s quite variable but usually finely minced pork and leek or whatever green vegetable is available. You have to chop the filling ingredients very fine on a 261 chopping board. And then you mix the vegetable well into the pork. Next, you go on to rolling out the skins. This is the tricky part. It?s best to get them pretty thin and roll out rough circles. The next move is to fill in dumpling. You only put quite a small amount of filling on the dough and then fold together the edges of the skin to form a half moon shape, and press the edges well together. It?s important to seal the edges well because otherwise the Jiaozi may lose their filling when you cook them. And the last stage is to cook them, or more precisely, to boil them in the water. When the dumplings float on the water, just scoop up them. And ready to eat. Don?t forget to have a dip in the vinegar or whatever sauce you like. Stuffed mushroom 262 This is a traditional German home dish. The main ingredients are medium-sized mushroom, pork and veal mince. Usually half pork and half veal, or as you like. If you can?t get them minced, of course, you have to buy the meat and mince it yourself. Then you peel and finely chop an onion and a couple of ginger slices. Put the meat, onion and gingers in a bowl, add a spoon of soy sauce, 3 teaspoons of cornflower, a pinch of sugar, salt and pepper, and mix well. Then you wash the mushrooms and remove the stems. Fill the cavity of the mushrooms with the meat stuffing and mound the filling in the center. When that?s done you melt some butter or other fat in an ovenproof dish and place the stuffed mushrooms in it. Cover the dish with a lid. Then bake in a moderate oven for 30 minutes. Then you remove the lid and bake the 263 dish for another 15 minutes. As soon as you take the mushrooms out of the oven, you drain off the juices in the pan. Ready to serve. Kung Pao Chicken I am going to describe a very famous Sichuan dish called Kung Pao Chicken, which is one of my favourites. Actually this dish is so famous that it is not long popular in China, it?s also highly recommended by many foreign friends I know. It tastes very delicious. If you prefer strong spicy taste, you will love it. The main ingredients are boneless chicken, red and green peppers, peanuts and chestnuts. This is how we usually cook Kung Pao Chicken. First of all, cut chicken into biteable pieces and then mix together with cornstarch, soy sauce and egg white in a bowl. Then in a separate bowl or plate, combine green peppers, chestnuts and celery and sit aside. The next move 264 is to heat the wok by pour a teaspoon of peanut oil. Stir-fry the red peppers until they are lightly brown. Then add chicken and stir-fry until the chicken is almost cooked through. Add the vegetables too and stir-fry for a few minutes. Add a pinch of soy sauce and heat for a few minutes to combine the flavours. The last thing is to sprinkle the peanuts over. Ready to serve. It is a very appetizing dish so it?s better to enjoy eating it over rice. Kung Pao Chicken is pretty universal in the Chinese restaurants so people eating out are keen to order this dish. Describe your favorite animal. Dog I love dog. Dogs are adorable animals. My dog?s name is Darcy and he?s a 2-year-old husky. It?s an interesting story how Darcy become one of the family. 265 Just before my 22-year-old birthday, my friends asked me what I wanted. I said how I wish I could have a pet dog. I didn?t take it serious because it was just a momentary thought and also it would could a fortune. But you know what, they chipped in and bought me a dog. And it?s Darcy. He is very energetic and smart. I have taught him a lot of tricks. He can play hide and seek. He knows how to fetch things if I tell him to. He does roll overs and can also stand on his hind legs. He wags his tail when he is happy. He always barks when somebody comes to the door. But sometimes he is over-friendly and throws himself to people. Sometimes he is very naughty. I don?t like it when I have to take him for a walk in the rain and then he jumps all over the sofa with his muddy paws. He loves to run and socialize with others. He is active as well. He is 266 able to run tirelessly for miles. When I?m walking him, it looks as if he is walking me. He?s so strong and quick that I feel I am all out, a good way to lose weight. Describe your favorite animal. Kiwis As you may or may not know, kiwi is the national bird of New Zealand – and sometimes New Zealanders themselves are known as 'Kiwis'. Now, while kiwis in the wild are a rare sight, the kiwi as a symbol is far more visible. Apart from being in toy stores and airport shops all over the world, you'll find them on our stamps and coins. The kiwi is the smallest member of the genus Apteryx which also includes ostriches and emu. It gets its name from its shrill call which sounds very much like this – kee-wee kee-wee. Kiwis live in forests or swamps and feed 267 on insects, worms, snails and berries. It's a nocturnal bird with limited sight and therefore it has to rely on its very keen sense of smell to find food and to sense danger, Its nostrils are actually right on the end of its long beak which is one third of the body length. Now here's an interesting fact. Although kiwis have wings, they serve little purpose because the kiwi is a flightless bird. Since white settlement of the islands, kiwi numbers have dropped from 12 million to less than 70,000 and our national bird is rapidly becoming an endangered species. This is because they?re being threatened by what we call introduced animals which were brought to New Zealand such as cats and ferrets which eat kiwi eggs and their chicks. Describe your favorite animal. Giant Panda 268 I?d like to say something about our national animal – giant panda. Pandas are famous for their black and white markings. The legs, shoulders, ears and oval patches around the eyes are black, and the rest of the coat is white. Pandas live in dense bamboo forests. They are good tree climbers and they can swim to escape predators. Different from the other bear species, the panda is the only herbivores in the family. Pandas feed mostly on bamboo but also eat flowers and even honey. Although it was once more widespread, today this rare species is limited to south-western China. The number of giant panda is decreasing mainly due to the loss of their natural habitat to the increasing human populations and periodic bamboo die-offs. Our government is taking efforts to save this kind of adorable animal. 269 Describe a game children play. The Eagle and the Chicks I am going to describe a very interesting Chinese game I played in my childhood. It is called 'The Eagle and the Chicks', which is a fun, easy to play and a perfect outdoor game for kids. This game needs at least five kids to start, and the more kids participating, the more fun it would be. Choose a kid as the eagle and another kid as the mother hen. The rest of the kids will be the chicks. In the game, the eagle tries to catch the last chick in the line so he or she will be no longer the eagle, and the mother hen tries to protect the chicks from the eagle. The chicks will line behind the mother hen one by one. The first chick behind the mother hen will hold on to her waist or cloth, the one behind the first chick will hold on the first, and so on. The eagle can catch the last chick by tagging, and 270 the mother hen can protect the chicks by spreading her arms shoulder high. When the chasing begins, the eagle is free to run anywhere to catch the chick. The mother hen will try to be in front of the eagle to protect the chicks. The eagle has to bypass the mother hen to catch the last chick and he will try to avoid any contact with the mother hen. To help the mother hen, the chicks will try to run out of the way of the eagle. The chicks don't have to be in the line all the time. They may run out of the line and play tag with the eagle. If the eagle catches the last chick, this round will be over and they switch roles for another round. Rubber Band Rope Jumping I?d like to say something about a game called rubber band rope jumping. Rubber band jumping was popular in my primary school which was 271 only for girls. This game can help children to practice their jumping skills, develop coordination, and also meet lots of friends. Rubber band jumping is a low cost game. We only need some rubber bands. We looped rubber bands together tightly until we had a larger one (One can select the length she likes). When we got three persons together, we could start our game. Here's how we played this special jump rope game. Two girls stood opposite each other and extended the rubber band. One player jumped and stood on one side of the rubber band, carrying the two sides together. Then she jumped again and made the two sides separate. After that she jumped again into the middle of the rubber-band and after that she jumped outside it. If we finished these steps without any mistakes, we started the next level. As 272 the game continued, the level of jumping got higher and higher. There were four jumping levels: ankle high, knee high, waist high, and under the shoulder. More and more girls tried to jump and we competed as teams. The game is fun. But it is kind of pity nowadays we very rarely see young girls playing this game. Hopscotch I want to say something about hopscotch, which I personally think is a pretty universal game around the world. Children always enjoy drawing grids on the sidewalk or on the ground and then jumping or hopping from one end of the grid to the other. I remember when I was a little boy, most afternoons I used to play hopscotch with my friends in our neighbourhood. There could be any number of players, which means I could even play by myself. But there were always 273 more fun with more kids. A stone was the only object we needed to play it. First of all, someone drew on the ground rectangles or squares arranged side by side with a figure in it. To play this game, each player had to hop to the first rectangle, then to the second one and them to the third one and so on. After reaching the last number with the last grid, the player had to turn around still on one leg and hop back from the last number to the first one. While hopping, the player must not step on the line between the rectangles, and must keep his balance. If, for instance, the player?s other leg ( the one which is lifted) touches the ground, the player then fails. Describe your favourite movie. You’ve got mail. I am a huge fan of love story. One of my favourite movies is “You?ve got mail”, 274 staring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, who have successfully proven their popularity in another equally romantic and hilarious comedy, “Sleepless in Seattle”. Tom Hanks is playing one of his least-agreeable characters, Joe Fox, part owner of the Fox Book Superstore chain. He is a cold businessman who puts the competition out of business without a second thought. Kathleen Kelly, on the other hand, is pure Meg Ryan. She owns a small children?s bookstore called “the shop around the corner”, finds herself in direct conflict with Joe, whose nearby superstore is stealing all of her customers by seducing them with discount and free gifts. They are business rivals in the real world, but fall for each other in the online chat room. If you are a fan of “Sleepless in Seattle”, you will almost certainly fall in love with the similar-yet-different nature of the 275 production. Describe your favourite movie. Saving Private Ryan When I first saw it in theatres, I can remember walking out of the theatre thinking that it would easily win the Best Picture Oscar. There wasn?t a doubt in my mind. And I am right. The movie stars Tom Hanks, of course, as captain John Miller, a man who must find Private James Ryan behind enemy lines. Why? His three brothers were killed in action, and as the only surviving son in his family, he?s being sent home. So Miller, along with his group venture deep into the heart of combat, questioning why they are there and having to find the answers within themselves. There are some of the most intense battle scenes ever put on film. But it goes along with the theme of the movie “war is hell”. 276 Describe an important city in your country. Shanghai Geographic region Lying at the gateway to the Yangtze River on the middle of China's East Coast, Shanghai is the largest economic and trade center, a comprehensive industrial base and the leading port in China, as well as a famous historical and cultural city with a total population of more than 16 million. History Shanghai used to be merely a small fishing village. After the first Opium War, the British named Shanghai a trading port, forcing the city's opening to foreign involvement administered by the British, French and American independent of Chinese law. Each colonial presence brought with its own culture, architecture and society. Thus began a mixing of cultures that shaped 277 Shanghai's openness to Western influence. Climate Shanghai has a delightful climate with four distinct seasons, generous sunshine and abundant rainfall. It belongs to the northern subtropical monsoon climate. The rainy season mainly come during the end of June and the early July. The weather is at its best in September and October, with a good chance of sunny days and mild temperatures. Winters can drop well below zero and summers are hot and humid with temperature as high as 40 centigrade. It very rarely snows here in Shanghai but the winter fog is quite frequent and the visibility in the morning can be rather poor. Attractions Shanghai is also a famous tourist destination with more 278 than 300 tourist attractions. The Bund, Yu Garden, Jade Buddha Temple, ancient pagodas and temples in ancient towns of Longhua have been always the major scenic spots in Shanghai for tourists from home and abroad. Relying on these traditional scenic spots, some large-scale festivities held during holidays, including the Bell-striking at Longhua Temple, the Temple Fair in Longhua, Shanghai Osmanthus Festival, Huangpu Tourism Festival and Open-air Concert on square, have been attracting an increasing number of domestic and foreign tourists and enriching the cultural life of Shanghai residents because of their strong folk colors. In addition, a number of tourist attractions with modern flavor, like the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Library, Shanghai Stadium and Shanghai Grand Theatre, were built in recent 279 years. Describe your hometown/your favorite city. Shanghai Shanghai is one of the world's largest cities, and is in some ways more like New York than Beijing. Lying at the estuary of the Chang Jiang (Yangtse) River, it is the centre of China's trade and industry. Shanghai is a densely populated city with almost 16 million people. Like many other international cities, Shanghai is a cosmopolitan trading port, with people from different parts of the world living 38 and working together. I enjoy the urban lifestyle I lead here, and make the most of the superb amenities, ranging from the excellent shops to some of the best restaurants in the world. In the evenings and at weekends there are always cultural events, with such diverse attractions as 280 operas, dramas and exhibitions. It is difficult to get bored. Of course, living in a city like this has its disadvantages as well. For a start, the cost of living can be very high, renting an apartment, for example, is very expensive. And as the city is expanding, there are a lot of building sites where new apartments are continually being built to deal with the urban sprawl and the rural-urban migration of population. Describe a museum. Shanghai Museum Shanghai Museum has a rich collection of 120,000 valuable antique items. It is especially famous for its treasures of bronzes, ceramics, Chinese calligraphy and traditional paintings. Shanghai Museum is a must-see for foreign visitors to Shanghai. The new 281 museum building was erected at the very center of Shanghai in September 1994. Its unique architectural form of a round top with a square base, symbolizing the ancient Chinese philosophy that the square earth is under the round sky, is a distinguished architectural combination of traditional feature and modern spirit. The new Shanghai Museum has ten special galleries of bronze, calligraphy, ceramics, furniture, jades, minority art, paintings, sculpture, seal carvings, coins and arts and crafts. Shanghai Museum has installed advanced security and fire alarm systems, educational services, a computerized library and an automation system. Besides this, Shanghai Museum has facilities for multimedia guide, an information center, a High Definition Graphics system, an audio tour, the lecture room equipped with a system of spontaneous 282 interpretation. Describe a museum. Museum of Anthropology I just came from Vancouver and I must say I had a fantastic time. There?s so much to see and do in the city. But if you get a chance to go there, there?s one place you mustn?t miss, and that „s the Museum of Anthropology. It was certainly one of the highlights of my time in Canada. The museum was actually established way back in 1949 and these days it?s one of the most popular in Canada. It?s worth going there just to see the building, in fact, because it?s stunningly modern and dramatic – it?s hard to believe it was built back in 1976. One very good thing is that the museum?s all on one floor, which makes it easily accessible for wheelchairs. Another plus is that it?s in the 283 most beautiful setting, overlooking the sea. And inside, you can see archaeological material from all over the world. It?s not a large museum, so it?s quite easy to find your way around. When you 39 arrive, you come into an entrance lobby with a small shop on the right, where you can buy guidebooks and some interesting souvenirs. Then, if you walk straight ahead, you?ll go down a sloping ramp until you come to a kind of crossroads with an information desk. It?s worth spending a few minutes there, „cos the staff are very helpful and you can pick up various useful maps and leaflets. If you turn right, you?ll eventually come to the theatre. Describe Chinese Traditional Architecture/an old building Si He Yuan 284 (Beijing Courtyard/quadrangle: a compound with houses around a square courtyard) A small or medium-size siheyuan usually has its main or only entrance gate built at the southeastern corner of the quadrangle with a screen wall just inside the prevent outside from peeping in. A notable feature of the courtyard house is that the complex is fully enclosed by buildings and walls. There are no windows on the outside walls, and usually the only opening to the outside is through the front gate. Such a resident offers space, comfortable and quite privacy. It is also good for security as well as protection against dust and storms. Grown with plants and flowers, the court is also a sort of garden. All the quadrangles, as product of feudal society, were built in accordance with a strict set of rules from their size and style one could tell whether they belonged 285 to private individuals or the powerful and rich. One of the most striking aspects of Chinese domestic architecture is the practice of making houses face south. My Dream House Let's pretend money is no object and build the home of our dreams. My design begins with the overall structure of a three-storey house. I love pavilion style roof. Beneath the roof is a cozy attic, where I can enjoy my private time, reading, meditating or whatsoever. I would have as many windows as possible, which are designed to make the rooms bright and ventilated, although I guess the cleaning and upkeep of these windows could be demanding. The sitting room is spacious, with huge closets, bookcases and lots and lots of room storage. I want the ceiling shaped like a dome with a 286 big crystal ball lamp hanging on the top. There must be a huge balcony with a great view to look out of, say a huge green park or the sea. And there have to be a French window to accompany it. Maybe I am thinking wild but I do think the surroundings must match my dream house. The bedroom is on the second floor. I don?t like the smell and touch of paint, which looks dull and cold so I would use wallpaper, the light pink colour. And there must be a lot of cushions. I love cushions. They are warm and soft. 40 I would want my house to be friendly, a nest where my friends could come and relax and enjoy. And I would like a huge front porch with a swing and room enough to have tea in the afternoon. 287 Describe a restaurant / a coffee bar you like most. This restaurant is not eye-catching. It is actually in the middle of several rows of residential houses, kind of isolated. However, it is still quite popular among the local community and most of the customers are regulars. The first word bumped into my mind when I stepped into this restaurant for the first time was “nostalgia”. There is a big old rusted gramophone in the centre and on the walls there are many black-and-white pictures of Shanghai in the early 20th century. In the evening, the candles are used instead of lamps. And the uniforms of the waitresses are cheongsam. Everything looks so unusual and you are like going back to the history. This restaurant serves a wide selection of food from Shanghai local ones to exotic western cuisines like sushi and pizza. One major reason why I 288 recommend this restaurant is that the food portion is very generous but the price is reasonable. I love the seafood and the snacks. Their service is also very impressive. The waitresses are efficient and friendly. It's also a cozy enough nook to sit in and play chess or get that necessary fix of caffeine while hanging with friends. The restaurant owner is a woman in her 40s. She has long wavy hair and a very attractive face… Describe an emblematic building Oriental Pearl TV Tower The Broadcasting & Television Tower of Oriental Pearl is the world's third tallest TV tower after the 553-meter CN Tower in Toronto and the 535-meter Moscow TV Tower. It is situated in the Pudong New Area, facing off the classic beauty of 289 the Bund. With a giddy height of 468 meters, the tower is Shanghai's landmark and a big magnet for tourists. Every visitor will undoubtedly be overwhelmed by its beauty. The designers magically designed eleven beautiful spheres of various sizes and three big columns together to represent pearls (as in "Shanghai, Pearl of the Orient"). The sightseeing floor is 263 meters high and it is the best place to get a bird's eye-view of Shanghai. When it is sunny, it is really relaxed and happy to have the distant views of Shanghai. In the upper sphere, there are also the Revolving Restaurant, the Disco Hall, the Piano Bar and twenty KTV rooms. The Restaurant revolves one circle an hour. Every Saturday evening, an open-air performance is held on the terrace under the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. The program offers mostly 290 acrobatics, singing and dancing. The Oriental Pearl Tower is a multi-functional establishment satisfying various needs in tourism, dining, shopping, entertainment, boarding and Audio & Video Broadcasting. It has already become one of the symbolic buildings and tourism resorts in Shanghai and is honored as one of the best views in Shanghai. 291 Library The library I?m going talk about is renmin university library, which equipped with the most advance information system in china. The library having over 6 hundred thousand books, and it?s been divided into 16 different categories. Moreover, the library also contain 5 computer rooms, there are about 200 sets of desktop computers per room. When you enter, you will find 10 touch screen computers in the lobby. They are for users to search the books in the library. It?s like a database with all the book name from the library in it. Considering all the excellent books that you can find, you will find it a real bargain to spend a day in this library. You can find from the latest scientific journals to document from 8 decades ago. Or even fashion magazine. No matter you are a student or not, you could always find what you want in this library. What I don?t really satisfy about this library is that the library should provide more study area for student, cos? it seem like you just can never find a seat without waiting. What?s more is the lighting system; I do feel the library?s light is a bit too bright for reading. 292 Toy As a boy who grew up in the 80?s, I just could not forget the craze for Nintendo GAMEBOY shared by this generation. Even till this day, many kids still like to show off before their peers if they are lucky enough to get it as a birthday gift. thLuckily, I got one on my 10 birthday. It?s a portable game console with black and white LCD display. Use 4 double A batteries. Mine was yellow, it was a limited edition. Of course, it?s made in Japan, you know, Japanese guys good at making games. To be honest, I had so much fun from that Game boy, speaking of which, Super Mario and pocket monster are my favorite games. I spend days and nights on it just trying to get to the next level. you know, kids and games, they can?t never get enough of it. Game boy was the best toy at that time. If you often worry about the risk and potential harm of ordinary toys for children, portable game console shall free you totally from this concern. With well-chosen Game materials, it provides a real fun time for children. Because of that Game boy, playing video game became one 293 of my interest. After that, Play station, Xbox, you name it. But I still kept that very first Game boy of mine, ?cos it contains so much memory of my childhood. 294 Old person My mother is my idol. She is a slim woman with medium height and long curly hair. She has a pair of watery eyes. Once you see her witty smiles, you can?t help being attracted by her charming personality that seems contagious to people around her. She is always full of energy and never gives up whenever she encounters difficulty. Every time she walks in, she brings a strong feeling of youthfulness, quite sub-consciously though and that gives all the people around a sense of energy and passion. She is a person who has a passion for the cooking. My Mum was an actress and she usually busy a lot. However, she is still willing to do some cooking for our family. Sometimes, she will even spend all her spare time on researching receipt online. She believes that anything is possible, and where is a will, where is a way. That is the reason why I love my mother so much. Teenagers 295 Teenagers are the future of our country , and I happen to meet one who left me the most unforgettable memory. He is my mate when I was at school, named J. I can not say he is that kind of person who can attracts me at the very first sight by the appearance, but his optimistic attitude towards life and the common ground we share do matter. Actually he is the one who very patient and considerate to his friends and studying. We share a lot in common. We both like playing basketball, for YaoMing and Shark are our favorite idol. Every game they play must be our cup of tea. Sometimes we like going to concert to listen to the music. How comfortable and relaxed the life would be if I am with him. J is not only a good friend of mine but also a hardworking person. He makes everything done well ,such as planting flowers, laundering clothes, and cleaning in order to let us live in a most wonderful, cozy place on earth. What impresses me most is that he likes encouraging people like me who feel discouraged when facing troubles. His word “tomorrow is another day” always lingering in my mind and burying in my heart. 296 In my mind ,he is the perfect teenager that I have ever seen in my life. We spend a lot of happy moment together . Even though now we are apart for the time being , our hearts and soul are still tightly connectly. 297 Quotation Name quotation What?s in a name? That which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet. -William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet Family quotation You don?t choose your family. That is the God?s gift to you, as you are to them. Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family. Blood is thicker than water. You can pick your friend but not your family. Sports / exercise quotation If only Hitler and Mussolini could have a good game of bowls once a week, I feel that Europe would not be as troubled as it was. Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness. 298 Food / diet quotation You are what you eat. Tell me what you eat. I?ll tell you who you are. Vegetables are a must on a diet. The belly rules the mind. Movie quotation Don?t judge a book by a movie. Why should people go out and pay money to see bad films when they can stay home and see bad television for nothing. Photograph quotation Buying a camera doesn?t make you a photographer. It makes you a camera owner. A great photograph is a full expression of what one feels about what is being photographed in the deepest sense. Television quotation Television has proved that people will look at anything 299 rather than each other. I find television to be very education. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go to the other room and read a book. If you read a lot of books, you?re considered well-read. But if you watch a lot of TV, you?re not considered well-viewed. Music quotation Without music life would be a mistake. Music?s the medicine of the mind. Music is the universal language of mankind. Music expresses feeling and thought, without language; it is above and beyond all words. Housework quotation I think housework is the reason most women go to the office. Reading / book quotation You are what you read. 300 A room without books is like a body without a soul. A wonderful thing about a book, in contrast to a computer screen, is that you can take it to bed with you. No entertainment is so cheap as reading, nor any pleasure so lasting. I find television to be very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go to the other room and read a book. If you read a lot of books, you?re considered well-read. But if you watch a lot of TV, you?re not considered well-viewed. Travel quotation The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. Animal quotation Animals are such agreeable friends – they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms. 43 To save animals is to save human being from committing 301 suicide. Friendship quotation A loyal friend laughs at your jokes when they?re not so good, and sympathizes with your problems when they?re not so bad. A friend is the man who knows all about you, and still likes you. If a friend is in trouble, don?t annoy him by asking if there is anything you can do. Think up something appropriate and do it. 302
