Materials&methods Materials Theexperimentribbedtowelgourdswere Xiatang1producedbyCollegeofHorticulture,South ChinaAgriculturalUniversityandLvsheng1 producedbyGuangzhouVegetableScientific ResearchInstitute. Methods TheexperimentwascarriedoutatGuangzhou AgriculturalScientificResearchInstitute,Baiyun 25 district,Guangzhou.300seedsofeachvarietywere dippedinwater(25?)for4hours,thenseparatedin6 groupsr50seedsofeachgroup).Twotreatments:(A) threegroupsofseedswereblottedupbyfilterpape~ airedfor1hour,placedonpetridisheswithmoist filterpaperandcoveredwithanothermoistfilterpaper一 (B)without1-hourairing,othergroupofseedswere directlyplacedonthepetridishesandcoveredwith moistfilterpaper.Weonlycalculatedseeds germinationpercentageinthefirst3daysbecausethe cotyledonswerealwaysetiolatedandputrescentafter 3days,whilethegerminatingenergywasinvestigated inthefirst2days. Seedsgerminationfollowsfourphasesaccording tophysiologicalprocesses:?.quickbreath(thefirst 10hours)?stagnatedbreath(1O-25hours)?the 2以breathfastigium(breakthroughtesta)?breath fallingdown.Oxygensupplyisthemainlimited andexpellingC02whenthetestawerecoveredby watermembrane,andthereforeinfluencedthe physiologicalreactioninseedgermination.The functionoffilterpaperdriedtreatmentandanhour airingafterseedpresoakingistoremovethewater membrane,meettherequirementofphysiological reactionduringthegermination,andimprovethe germinationrateandgerminatingenergyofribbed towelgourdfinally.
