布里斯托大学纪录片专业问卷 QUESTIONS: APPLICANTS FOR THE MA IN DOCUMENTARY PRACTICE All applicants are asked the standard set of questions set out below. You may already have answered some of these questions elsewhere in your application, but it helps us if you would answer them here anyway. Interviews will not normally be conducted unless you specifically request one, so you should respond to the questions with appropriate care and attention, and take note of the guidance offered. While some questions can be answered simply, others invite a more reflective and considered response, and are an opportunity for you to demonstrate your suitability for postgraduate study in this field. Flimsy responses will severely reduce your chances of being offered a place, notwithstanding your academic record and/or references. 1. Have you applied for other courses - if so where? 2. If you receive a number of offers for places which will be your first choice? Why? (Please detail the particular features of the courses you have considered, and say how these will or will not meet your own needs and ambitions at this stage of your career) 3. What are your reasons for applying to Bristol in particular? (In addition to mentioning what it is about the programme that particularly attracts you, please explain how you came to hear about the programme and the university) 4. What are the most significant things you hope to gain from the course and your time in Bristol? (This is an opportunity to refer not only to the course contents but to your own self-evaluation of your learning needs at this time, and your assessment of how these might be met by the Bristol programme) 5. What do you consider to be your main strengths as a potential practitioner in documentary? (This is an opportunity to mention specific things you have achieved or what drives you within the broad intellectual and/or artistic field – your interests, passions and experience. It is also an opportunity for an appropriately reflective assessment of the personal qualities you have brought, or hope to bring, to such work). 6. What do you think you will contribute to the broad field of documentary practice within an academic environment? (This is an opportunity to mention specific circumstances in which you have worked, and how you feel you contributed to the process; remember that good habits such as discipline, punctuality and consideration are as important as apparently more glamorous qualities, and use this question to give us a sense of what to expect in working with you). 7. What (if you have any ideas at this stage) general area of subject matter do you wish to pursue? (Please use this question to show that you have an appropriately informed sense of your own aptitudes, ambitions, and concerns.) 8. What is the primary medium in which your current skills lie, how would you seek to develop and/or adapt it in your MA? (This is an opportunity to tell us more about your practice and show us that you have both thought intelligently and conducted appropriate basic research to arrive at a sense of what the programme offers, and how you might use it to develop.) 9. Where do you wish to work - i.e. which part of the world? What are your reasons for this? (This is an opportunity to demonstrate an informed sense of the social context in which you wish to work, and how your practice will contribute to this environment and your own ambitions within it) 10. How do you think you would pursue this ambition within the first few years of completing the course? (Please be as specific as possible about potential career pathways you hope to pursue.) 11. What documentary material do you look to as a source of inspiration? Why? (This is an opportunity to demonstrate an informed and appropriately literate appreciation of some specific works; you should think of this question as an invitation to present an analytical, albeit necessarily condensed and concise { under 500 words} argument explaining your preferences.) 12. Do you have any ideas for projects which you would like to develop in the immediate future? (While you will NOT be obliged to restrict yourself to anything you say here, this is an opportunity to show that you have interesting ideas, that your ambitions are more than merely vague, and that you have a realistic sense of what might be achievable on the MA.) Supporting Material You are encouraged to send supporting material for your application. It must either be entirely your own work, or your own contribution should be made entirely clear. Audiovisual material should be on disc (CD or DVD playable/readable on standard office PC) and other materials should be in an appropriate form. Submissions are not compulsory, and should consist of no more than two of the following: Treatment or script for documentary film – 4 pages Documentary writing – 2 pages Critical/academic writing – 2 pages Moving image material – 2 minutes Design or other material – 12 images Photography – 12 images Discs will not be returned. We hope you find these questions a useful way to think and tell us about what you hope to achieve from the programme and beyond. Please contact the programme director if you have any questions.
