An English name is often made up of three parts: forename+ middle name + surname. For example, William Jefferson Clinton, William is the forename; Jefferson is the middle name and Clinton is the surname. However, the middle name is often omitted in many occasions, such as George Bush. And many people like using their nickname instead of the formal forename, for instance, Bill Clinton.
According to the British custom, a baby is usually named by the pastor or their parents when it is baptized. This kind of name is called forename.
1. The names may come from the Bible, Greek and Roman Mythology, ancient celebrities or literary classics
2. The names may quote the naming of ancestors’ hometown,
mountains and rivers, fish and animals, flowers and trees.
3. Creating new forenames by using the technology of word formation such as invented order and combination.
Middle name is normally chosen by parents at the same time as the first name. The sources of the middle name are as follows:
1. The given name of a relative is often used as a middle name because of tradition or esteem.
2. Surnames are also sometimes used as middle names, usually to honor a relative.
The English had only giving names for a long time. Not until
ththe 16 century were the surnames used widely. Their surnames are mainly derived from the following:
1. Add an affix to the forename, such as the prefixes: M'-, Mc-,Mac-, Fitz-; and the suffixes: -s, -son, -ing. All of the affixes mean someone’s son or descendant.
2. The words about the landform or the name of a place, such as Hill, Brook.
3. The words that show the professions, such as Carter, Smith.
