Ammonia Water and Brine Chillers Ammonia Water and Brine Chillers
for
Breweries and
Bottling Factories
Experience and know how - not only in industrial refrigeration, but also about your production process is the
key for good engineering. Together with you, we are checking all possible cooling consumers, their sizing
and their simultaneities. This allows us to prepare a first proposal. Options, like multi stage cooling systems,
ice banks, heat recovery systems or further possibilities for energy saving will then be discussed in detail.

AMMONIA – THE IDEAL REFRIGERANT FOR INDUSTRIAL REFRIGERATION
• safe
While ammonia, like many other substances, can displace oxygen or
become considered toxic if released in sufficient quantities into a
poorly ventilated area, ammonia itself is not a cumulative poison. It
is difficult to ignite and has limited explosive potential.
The long and successful use of ammonia in industrial closed circuit
refrigeration systems proves that its hazards are minimal. A properly
designed refrigeration plant, developed and tested by a reputable
manufacturer makes the use of ammonia as refrigerant as
dependable and safe as to use steam, electricity or any of the
halocarbon refrigerants.
• self alarming
The distinctive, quickly detectable odour of ammonia serves as its
own warning agent. If a leak occurs the in-plant service personnel is
alerted much before ammonia gets to a dangerous concentration.
• efficient
It is a fact, that ammonia in comparison to other substances
can serve its purpose with by far the least consumption of
energy. Ammonia has a high volumetric refrigeration efficiency,
which reflects positively on the size of the compressor and the
dimensions of the piping. It shows excellent heat transfer properties,
which becomes evident in small heat exchangers, comparatively high
evaporation temperatures and low condensation temperatures
resulting in high coefficients of performance (COP).
Ammonia plants are easy to install and operate, highly reliable and
easy to modify or expand.
• non polluting
Ammonia has no ozone depletion potential, no direct greenhouse
impact and it’s indirect impact is comparatively low due to the high
efficiency. In nature ammonia is produced by biological processes
and is naturally decomposed. The consequent preference of the
outstanding refrigerant ammonia would effectively support the goal
of the world community to reduce CO2 emissions.
• CFC alternatives
If the use of ammonia is not possible, HANSA INDUSTRIANLAGEN
provides a wide range of optimized refrigeration units operating with
FREON-refrigerants.

Finding your refrigeration system
The Beginning:
Shell and Tube evaporators
The flooded System
For long term the flooded shell
and tube evaporator was the
commonly used evaporator system
in industrial refrigeration with
ammonia.
Decades of experience with this
energetically very convenient
system made it highly reliable.
However, these systems work with
very high ammonia chargesvery high ammonia chargesvery high ammonia chargesvery high ammonia charges.
Due to an increasing number of
regulations and directives
concerning the safety of industrial
refrigeration plants, the reduction
of the ammonia charge has
become a more and more
important issue.
Besides the search for alternative
refrigerants which are
environmentally acceptable and
energetically competitive to
ammonia, several solutions
dealing with the above mentioned
problem of improving the safety by
reducing the ammonia charge
have been proposed during the
last years:
Spray Type evaporators – HANSA Type: TIWK-N
++++ high COP (small ∆T) ---- required space
++++ highest cooling capacitieshighest cooling capacitieshighest cooling capacitieshighest cooling capacities
++++ no danger of freezing
++++ easy mechanical cleaning
++++ no superheat of suction gas
Fully welded Shell and Plate Type evaporator (flooded)
HANSA Type: TIWK-AP

++++ for small and high cooling cap.
++++ little required space
++++ no superheat of suction gas

+ easy controllable
The Concept:
A tailormade system for your demand
HIGH CAPACITY SHELL AND PLATE-TYPE EVAPORATORS WITH AMMONIA SEPARATOR
• compact design
the shell and plate type evaporator
combines the energetically
advantages of the flooded system
with the high efficiency and low
refrigerant charge of plate type heat
exchangers.
• range of capacity
the AP-system is available from
100 kW to more than 2000 kW per
unit.
• variability
all systems are available as
packaged units or in split design.
With evaporative, water-cooled or
hybrid dry-cooled condensers
• safety
completely welded heat exchanger
plates avoid problems known when
using ammonia with soldered or
sealed plate type heat exchangers.
• low energy – highest COP
due to the high pressure float valve
control and no superheating of the
suction gas, highest coefficients of
performance are obtained.
• simple operation
the refrigeration system AP works
with ammonia of standard quality
(DIN 8960) and with standard
mineral oils for lubrication.

Total Reliability – The compressor, the heart of the chiller
A range of outstandingly reliable open type, reciprocating refrigeration
compressors, designed to work efficiently in almost any type of
industrial refrigeration installation. These compressors are the result of
an intensive R&D effort. Central to their design it is absolute reliability
under the most demanding circumstances and with an alert eye to
economics, that is a modest investment at low maintenance costs. This
was achieved by incorporating innovations like composite material
valves and lightweight pistons with low-wear piston rings into a design
that has already proven itself in actual practice. Combined with the
unique welded steel compressor concept, these innovative features
enable us to offer you total reliability and maximum efficiency. The
HANSA/Grasso HRC compressors are probably of the most modern
design compressors available in the market of today.
Welded Steel Crankcase
The concept of a welded steel crankcase keeps the discharge
temperatures low and eliminates the need for external oil and/or
cylinder head cooling systems. This unique concept has proven itself in
more than 50,000 compressors all over the world.
Suction and Discharge Valve
Combined composite material suction and discharge valves have been
specially developed to ensure optimal performance and outstanding
reliability.
Suction Valve Lifting
Hydraulic valve lifting mechanisms for the individual cylinders ensure
optimal capacity control and for the compound compressors additional
fast pull down capacities.
Lubrication
Fully integrated lubrication system prevents oil leakage, ensures
effective internal cooling and a perfect oil supply to the compressor
bearings.
Piston/Connecting Rod assemblies and cylinder Liners
The surface finish of the cylinder liners and the special piston rings
ensures low wear and a long service life.
Bearings
High quality, low load radial and axial bearings with excellent sliding
and running characteristics reduce wear to a minimum.
Rotary Shaft Seal
A virtually gastight, oil-cooled seal guarantees minimum leakage and
a long service life.
