Mutual Understanding
As Chinese people’s material life is fulfilled gradually, more and more people begin to pursue enjoyment of spirit like traveling. However, misunderstanding arises when people from different cultural backgrounds meet, and the visitor is often seen as an “intruder” intent on doing harm. Most people are quite angry about it. For this phenomenon, I think the only effective way is to build bridges of understanding through changes made from both sides.
Recently, I’ve got such a news, an inland family went to Hongkong for holiday. When they were shopping, the little baby wanted to defecate, so the parents let the baby defecate on the street in shopping center. Some passers-by took photos, which infuriated the father and then a quarrel broke out. After that, many local citizens criticized the parents through various ways. Which made the relation between inland and Hongkong more hostile.
For this problem, if the father communicated well with the passers-by, I believe they will edit out the photos. The parents should explain the emergency at that moment to avoid the conflict in lieu of quarreling with them. If there were a bridge of understanding between both sides, the little event would not get journalists’ attention and cause such serious results.
Besides, another phenomenon also makes us been criticized by the
public. Several months ago, a 15-year-old student carved his name on a 3500-year-old Egyptian temple when traveling. After being reported through media, our Chinese people’s moral qualities get denial from the world. For this, many Chinese people are angry and feeling ashamed, because they are notorious in other people’s eyes.
To solve the problem, also the only effective way is to build bridge of understanding. First, Chinese educational department together with other authorities should strengthen students’ education of value; let them know what can be done and what is forbidden. Carving name on historic sites is a destroying behavior. Next, the managers of the temple can put up warning board to prevent this kind of behavior. I believe the relevant phenomenons will disappear in the future through mutual efforts. Good communication can solve almost everything.
So, when we meet above problems, please don’t be angry. the essence of these is nothing but lacking of communicating. If both sides have understood each other well, they’ll be no bad behaviors in cross-cultural communication.
