A better year for Manganese Bronze?
To many people the name Manganese Bronze might not mean very much. But ask any taxi driver, and
he’ll be able to talk about it with authority, because Manganese Bronze makes around 75% of the UK’s
black taxi cabs.
The company used to make the traditional cab, the model that is seen everywhere on London’s streets. But
it has now stopped the production of this model, and introduced the new-look TX1 cab instead.
Manganese Bronze, whose manufacturing plant is based in Coventry, is expected to announce tomorrow
pre-tax profits of around ,3.5 millin, compared with ,5 millilon the previous year. This sudden drop in performance helps to explain why its share price has haived from 400p to just over 200p in the past twelve months.
The taxi side of the business is doing well. However, its components side, which makes car parts for
several of the big motor manufacturers, has had a disappointing year. What will help the company’s luck
change for the better? Last week, at the Frankfurt motor show, Manganese Bronze pressnted a black cab
with left-hand drive. Perhaps there will be a large international market for London buses next.
