Rather than search for the best move in a given position, the computer considers all white's moves, and all black's possible replies, and all white's replies to those replies, and so on for, say, a dozen turns. The resulting map of possible moves has millions of branches. The computer combs through the possible outcomes and plays the one move that would give its opponent the fewest chances of winning. Unfortunately, brute force will not work in Go. First, the game has many more possible positions than chess does. Second, the number of possible moves from a typical position in Go is about 200, compared with about a dozen in chess. Finally, evaluating a Go position is fiendishly difficult. Posterity is charitably reticent about the authorship of the memorable utterance of public heroes. Washington (not Hamilton) receives the credit for his farewell address. And we know, of course, that many aides collaborate on a President’s inaugural address. Still Kennedy’s phrases somehow take the place of critical scrutiny of his achievements and in their own way enrich our tradition. Inevitably the voice of Japan seems less loud and distinct than it should be. This is a sorry state of affairs for a country so great in economic size and so overwhelmingly dependent on its international relations. There are a number of reasons for this blind spot. One is that Japan has traditionally thought of contact with other cultures as being through the written words, not as two-way oral communication. There even seemed an advantage in not communicating with foreigners, and in keeping them from learning about Japan and what was in the minds of Japanese.
