It is a state-run regular higher educational institution and it is put on record by National Ministry of Education. The college has an area of about 700 hectares, architectural area is more than 70,000 square meters with green grass, tall trees and beautiful flowers, which is a desire place for teachers and students to work and study. The college is noted for a competent teaching staff of 191 full-time teachers now, who are working in six departments: the Chinese Department, the Department of Foreign Languages, the Department of Mathematics and Application, the Department of Electronic Information, the Department of Economic Management, and the Department of Fine Arts and Physical Education. It offers 22 specialties. There are 3806 full-time students and 425 correspondence students. A few colleges have set up undergraduate correspondence education spots here, such as Guangdong Education College, Han Shan Normal College, Hui Zhou College. Our college also jointly runs a school with the Open College of South China Normal University. The two (or three)-year-term college students can enter for relevant bachelor degrees, obtain the undergraduate diploma awarded by the Self-study Examination Committee of the province and China Normal University after majoring in the undergraduate courses, then apply for the bachelor's degree of South China Normal University. Shanwei Vocational and Technical College is based on Shanwei area, enrolling new students from our province and partly from other provinces. Our purpose is all kinds of talents who are needed badly nowadays and 1 teachers of middle and primary schools. The number of its full-time students amounts to 1413 who are divided into 29 classes for the sake of small-class teaching and management. The Department offers two diploma program for students majoring in English Education of Primary School, and the three-year program for students majoring in business English. The department is characterized by its high-qualified teachers, the mainstay of whom is constituted by young and middle-aged teachers. Now it has a teaching staff of 43, among whom are 1 associate professors, one advanced title of technical post and 1 foreign teacher for every year. One teacher is studying the master degrees. It offers three-year diploma program for students majoring in Engineering Technology of Electronic Information, Technology of Applied Electrons, Operation and Management of Electronic Equipments and Application. The total number of the students is 310 at present. In addition, it has six labs, one multi-media room and one room for the faculty to make courseware. It has a well-qualified teaching staff with 14 part-time teachers including 4 of the advanced title of technical post and 6 of the middle title of technical post all of whom not only have been improving the level of their own profession but also quest for the new teaching methods. Now we?re going to listen to two conversations about how people talk when they meet and part from each other. I want each of you to tick the answers to the following questions as you listen. I will let you listen twice. During the first listening, make sure you understand what people are talking about. During the second listening, tick the answers to the questions. If there is any word you don?t understand, just ask me. (2) Now, I am going to put you into pairs to practise the following conversations. First, you and your partner read the conversations on the left of the table. When you are sure that you can read them correctly try to use the words in the right side of the table to make your own conversation. OK? When you?re talking, I?ll be walking around and if there is anything you?d like to ask me, like how to say this or that, you just call me and I?ll come and help. Finally, we?ll invite some students to present their conversations to the class. OK? Off you go now. (3) Hello, everybody! Today we are going to learn how to describe things and talk about one?s job. This doesn?t mean giving a detailed description of an object or one?s job. We can say what sort of thing an object is or what one does. To do so, we should mentions some basic, striking characteristics or perhaps give some of your attitude towards the object or the job. Or we can make an assessment. But before you speak, first take a look at how the native speakers describe things or talk about their jobs. (4) OK. Now can you stop what you?re doing now? We are going to do a new task—some speaking practice. Can you look at Activity 4 on page 49 in your book?…Right, got it? OK. Now in this activity, there are a monologue in task one and a conversation in task two. They are the two models for you to make your own conversations. When you do task one, ask your partner to listen to your presentation. Does it sound like a natural talk? Ask your partner to give his/her opinion. Then, try to make a similar monologue of your own. Remember, you must sound like you are talking to a friend. And about task two. (5) Hello, everybody, we are going to let you have a try at making your own conversation. To make the job easier, you and your partner can first read the conversation model on the left side of the table until you are quite comfortable with it. Right next to the model is the situation for your own conversation. You may start with the sentence printed below. If you have any problems or difficulties, just put up your hands. I?ll be there to help you. Finally, we?ll ask some of you to present your conversation to the class. Now, off you go. (6) 10 Right, now, today we?re going to do something quite different from what we have done before, it?s a kind of reading comprehension activity. We are going to read a story. But before I set you working, let?s first think of a few questions as warm up. The story is called … (7) Now, we are going to move forward to a new task. In this activity, you will read a couple of sentences which are used for the purposes similar to those in the activity “What are they for?”. I?d like you to read them fairly quickly and imagine when and where these sentences are said or used. Then, check your prediction by reading the sentences in the “Matching” section. After that, check your work with your partner. OK? If you can?t see eye to eye with each other, bring your problem to me. Of course, you can also check your answer with other classmates. OK. Got it?
