I’ve lived in Minneapolis for six years and graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in furniture design. Sustainable design was a focus of mine towards the end of school. This coupled with my extensive childhood experience building forts and climbing anything that was thrill-worthy synthesized into building treehouses. Since the original structure was built in August of 2005, the treehouse has expanded and evolved. Taking my cues from over 24 magazine publications and an international design community that seems to be endlessly fascinated by treehouses it is clear to me that the geodesic treehouse has an immensely greater potential and power than simply a house in a tree. A geodesic dome is the strongest most efficient structure by its surface area to volume ratio. Making the dome a sphere brings the geodesic to its most structurally integral state. As a sphere its best structural qualities are enhanced. During Buckminster Fullers life he envisioned a world that would take advantage of the more efficient building methods of the geodesic dome in both commercial and residential architecture. Although it did have tremendous success and is still widely used today, fitting a world of rectangles and 90-degree objects into a geodesic does not appeal to a conventional crowd. Its spectacular appearance draws attention and frightens neighbors and for most Middle America families looking to blend into an already bland residential landscape the geodesic is not necessarily what they had in mind. Bucky stated before he passed that most of his designs would not be needed in his lifetime but would be of greater use to society long after he had passed. The geodesics time to flourish is still upon us and I see it happening in the trees. O2 Treehouse is a prefab treehouse. It will fit in any tree, single trunk, multi trunk deciduous, or even multiple trees in a forest. Geodesics offer incredible diversity of form. Its methods of construction can be tailored to any type of material. Originally my business approach was to make the treehouse affordable for any middle-income family to be able to put one up in their yard. Then the idea was to create a worldwide eco village treehouse brand. This is quite an ambitious undertaking that could possibly require a lifes worth of work to complete. The treehouse’s sustainable value material wise is valid but at the end of the day it is still just another novelty object. The sphere is a starting point that can morph and expand into much more complex and architecturally challenging forms.
