Week 5 I. Re-describe the news in your own words or offer your reflections on the news. New Job Outlook Bleak In the latest indication of the economic slowdown, 20 percent fewer white-collar workers are looking to change jobs this year than a year ago. Although, many disgruntled workers often go looking for a new challenge as soon as they have picked up their end-of-year bonus, people are taking a more conservative approach this year due to economic slowdown. Traditionally at this time of year, most office workers are thinking about collecting their end-of-year bonus and immediately looking for a better job. However, the global financial crisis has brought about a change of heart for some people. II. Oral interpretation (Please just use the translations as general references. We encourage thinking and learning in English without instant or word-by-word translations) Drinking Coffee Could Make You Smarter There was a report recently on how scientists in Hawaii are trying to grow a kind of coffee that doesn’t have any caffeine. Why? Because a lot of people enjoy a nice cup of java, but they don’t always want the jolt it gives them. They may want it now, though. New evidence suggests that the caffeine in coffee might do more than keep you alert. It might make you smarter. Researchers in Israel say caffeine makes your brain cells grow- especially the ones you use for thinking. Scientists say that could be why drinking coffee seems to improve your memory and learning. Of course, the positive effect wears off after a couple of hours. So to make sure the caffeine continues to work, you need to drink a lot of coffee. How much? Scientists say you need to drink about 10 cups. But you don’t need to drink it all at once. Questions of the Day 1.
