Should Students Be Allowed to Live off Campus? (供考博同学用) Some time ago, China's Ministry of Education banned university students from renting private accommodation during their studies. To this people’s attitudes differ sharply. Some, especially school administrators and parents, hold the positive view. They say that most students prefer to live off campus for the purpose of living with their boyfriends or girl friends, which might severely affect their study. And as most of them are still immature psychologically, they might regret what they are doing now in the future. Besides, they argue that living on campus can provide a good climate for study, ensure the safety of students and facilitate communication between them, which is conducive their growth. However, many others, particularly students, hold the opposite view. They claim that the living conditions on campus are unbearable. First, the dormitory is crowded. Usually, 4 to 8 students share a room. Secondly, it is badly equipped, without air-conditioners or access to the Internet. Last but not least, the university cuts the electricity too early every night, usually t 11:30 p.m. during the week. Therefore, they argue that many students choose to live off campus in rented houses with the purpose of enjoying a reasonably better living environment, protecting their privacy and concentrating more on their studies, instead of cohabitating with their boy friends or girl friends. Besides, the Ministry of Education has already lifted the ban on students getting married. Then why shouldn’t married students be allowed to rent off-campus accommodation? As far as I am concerned,// Weighing the arguments of both sides, I tend to believe that universities should be more flexible towards the administration of dorms. It is true that schools have the responsibility to care about students' study and life, but this does not give them the right to dictate every part of student life. Besides, the ban should never be a cut-off measure and special situations should be considered. Meanwhile, the school should try to upgrade the overall condition of dorms and provide all students with a better service at a low price. (或Personally, I am in favor of the decision of China's Ministry of Education. Anyway, college students, most aged 18-22, are still too young to control themselves or make proper decisions. Besides, living on campus promotes a sense of belonging by being closely connected with other students. This could truly be a valuable part of the four-year college education. Last but not least, students living on campus also have easier access to vast school resources, such as libraries, computer rooms and various evening seminars.) . Directions: Write an essay of about 200 words based on the drawing given below. In your essay, you should 1) describe the drawing briefly; 2) interpret the social phenomenon reflected by it; 3) give your point of view. A Knock-off CCTV Spring Festival Gala This is a common but significant picture. As we can see in it, the TV station of a town is holding a Spring Festival gala. Obviously, it is imitating and challenging the CCTV version, because we can see they have invited some people quite resembling those famous stars like Zhou Jielun, Liu Huan and Cai Yilin. Simple as the picture is, the message it conveys is profound and far-reaching. Apparently, it aims to tell us that due attention should be paid to grassroots culture. There is no denying the fact that nowadays an increasing number of common people around us are creative. Have a look around and we can find examples too many to enumerate. A typical illustration is many people have made mobile phones by imitating some famous brands. A host of factors may have led to such phenomena, but the vital one is the original version is too expensive or too dull. Should this situation continue, the consequence would be encouraging. In conclusion, this picture is truly instructive. Actually, creativity is indispensible if we wish to make achievements in our studies or work, or indeed in any other aspect of our lives. Therefore, pertinent policies should be formulated and enforced to protect and encourage people’s creativity. 2. Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic College Students’ Job Hunting. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below: 1) 近年来出现了大学毕业生就业难的问题。 2) 产生这一问题的原因。 3) 如何解决这一问题。 College Students’ Job Hunting There is no denying the fact that job hunting is a grave problem with which college graduates are confronted. Reports are often heard upon the number of students who fail to find a job on graduation. Actually, the problem has become so widespread that it has severely affected the graduates’ life and hindered the development of economy. A number of factors account for the problem, but the following are the most critical ones. First, in recent years, colleges and universities have enrolled so many students that the number of graduates are far greater than the need in the market. Secondly, many graduates would rather stay in large cities without suitable jobs to do than go to small towns or the country. Last but not least, the ongoing financial crisis and economic depression aggravate the difficulty in job-seeking. In view of the seriousness of the problem, effective measures must be taken before things get worse. For one thing, it is essential that the government create more job opportunities by all means. For another, graduates should change their attitude towards employment and go to work in small cities and the country. With these measures taken, we have reasons to believe that the problem can be solved in the near future. 1.(北京大学2007) Directions: Write a short composition of about 250 to 300 words on the topic given below. Write it neatly on ANSWER SHEET (2). Traditional Chinese Medicine 参考范文 There is no denying the fact that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a hotly debated topic in China today. Some hold that it should be eliminated from the Chinese medical care system. They argue that TCM is "unscientific" at best and "pseudo-science" at worst. However, I suspect that the people who wave "science" as a weapon against TCM themselves have limited ideas of what the word "science" really is, even though they have received a good science education. The word "science" originates in Latin, meaning producing knowledge. By definition, there should be no argument about TCM, since generations of TCM practitioners over centuries have accumulated rich experiences and made TCM a knowledge and a science that hundreds of millions still seek for curing diseases and improving health. The opponents of TCM are right in their argument that TCM is not an "exact science," like chemistry or physics, and they have good reasons to tell people that TCM may not cure all and that herbal TCM concoctions some folk doctors prescribe may not be as effective as proclaimed. But they forget that Western medicine, too, does not cure all, and that over the past few decades, many "scientifically"-approved drugs are banned as a result of serious side effects. To sum up, despite all the unknowns and malpractices associated with TCM, I don't believe it is scientific to eliminate centuries' old knowledge, which helped sustain the livelihood of us Chinese in the past and still plays an important part in improving our quality of life. 2.(北京大学2006) Directions: Write a short composition of about 250 to 300 words on the topic given below. Write it neatly on ANSWER SHEET (2). Recently, a newspaper carried an article entitled: “We Should No Longer Force Gong Li and Zhang Yimou to Take Part in National Politics”. The article argued that some artists and film stars are unwilling or unqualified to represent the people in the People's Congress or the People's Political Consultative Conference, and they should not be forced, to do so. What do you think? 参考范文 Recently, an article carried by a newspaper argued that some artists and film stars, like Gong Li and Zhang Yimou, are unwilling or unqualified to represent the people in the People's Congress or the People's Political Consultative Conference, and they should not be forced, to do so. This article really said what I wanted to. There seems to be a prevailing tendency in this country that any figure successful in a professional field is worth a political position and must be provided with it. Taking a look around, we can find examples too numerous to list. Apart from Gong Li and Zhang Yimou, we can think of Guo Moruo the famous writer and poet, Cai Zhenhua the well-known ping pong player and coach, Feng Gong the reputable actor, and so on. Do they really possess the ability to lead or to represent the people? It is quite doubtable. They may excel in their professional realm, but they may not be competent at political positions. As to those stars, they definitely belong to the minority of people rather than the masses. What’s worse, many of them loathe being a leader or a representative. Forcing artists or scientists to take part in national politics may also risk hindering their further development in their own professions. In view of what has been discussed above, it imperative for us to reconsider the running system of the People's Congress or the People's Political Consultative Conference. They should be made to represent the masses of people. 3.(中科院2006.3) PART V WRITING (40 minutes, 20 points) Directions: Write an essay of no less than 200 words on the topic given below. Use the proper space on your Answer Sheet Ⅱ. China has the greatest population in the world and a large pool of research workers, yet it has not produced a single Nobel Prize winner so far. What has caused this situation in your opinion? 参考范文 Nobel Prize, an international award given for achievements in various academic fields, has been a great honor to people from different countries. However, China, with the greatest population and a large number of research workers, has not produced a single Nobel Prize winner so far. In my opinion, various contributing factors can be identified as follows. First of all, though the educational system in China has fostered many researchers, it somehow hinders individuals’ creativity. Children are usually not valued by their unique way of thinking, but are encouraged to be obedient. Especially in the traditional cramming method of teaching, schools lay particular stress on memorization at the expense of comprehension, which has a very bad influence on students’ ability to solve difficult problems. Furthermore, for a long period in Chinese history, China had been isolated from the outside world. In ancient times, we were self-contained for self-pride, believing that China was at the center of the whole universe. In modem times, we were self-fettered for self-protection, afraid of the invasion of other countries. As a consequence, China has lagged behind in many fields including science development. Researchers in China have little idea about the research interests of their own areas. At the same time, discoveries by Chinese researchers cannot be made known to foreign countries. Fortunately, the situation mentioned above has been changing. Our educational system has improved a great deal and more and more opportunities to communicate with the external world have been offered. Therefore, I am sure that in the near future China will have one or more Nobel Prize winners. 4.(北京航空航天大学2004) Directions: Write a composition of no less than 200 words based on the following instruction. In the past few years, several plagiarism(抄袭,剽窃) cases have been exposed in China; some involve professors and famous scholars while some others involve graduate students who are working as researchers. Please write a composition of no less than 200 words on your attitude towards plagiarism. You may also illustrate your opinion on academic integrity (正直) and give suggestions on how to preserve it in the academic world. 参考范文 There is no denying the fact that plagiarism has been a hotly debated topic in the academic world in China. In the past few years, several plagiarism cases have been exposed, some involving professors and famous scholars while some others involving graduate students who are working as researchers. A number of factors could account for the prevalence of plagiarism, but the following might be the critical ones. In the first place, there has been a lack of emphasis on intellectual property rights in this country. Many authors fail to take the plagiarizer to court even if they know who he or she is. This to some extent has added fuel to the immoral and illegal actions. In the second place, the spirit of creation and innovation is still not in its place. Last but not least, many scholars and researchers are under extreme pressure due to the current academic system which lays too much emphasis on papers. Actions of plagiarism are bound to generate severe consequences if we keep turning a blind eye to them. First and foremost, they directly infringe upon other authors’ property rights. Secondly, they encourage an unhealthy academic atmosphere. Last but not least, they hinder the development of the nation’s science, technology and culture In view of the seriousness of this problem, effective measures must be taken before things get worse. First, it is essential that laws and regulations be worked out and enforced to ban plagiarism. Secondly, scholars and researchers should enhance their awareness of protecting intellectual property rights. Only with these measures taken can we expect a brighter future of academics. 2.(四川大学2008)Is University Expansion a Good Thing There is no denying the fact that university expansion has become a hotly debated topic in China in the past years. (Actually, ever since the state resumed its policy of holding the national college entrance examinations, the number of people enrolling in colleges has been increasing. In the past few years particularly, the number of students in colleges has been soaring.) To this issue people’s attitudes differ sharply. Some hold the positive view. They claim that university expansion is a perfect index of the nation’s fast developing economy and society and that it reflects the rising of people’s level of education. Others, however, hold the opposite view. They claim that university expansion like that in China is dangerous. First, university expansion often means institutions of higher education lower their standards of recruiting students, which in turn results in the degradation of the quality of college graduates. Secondly, with the sharp increase in the number of students, education resources including teaching staff, equipments, buildings and books obviously loom in short. Personally, I believe that we should not go to extremes. On the one hand, we have to realize that university expansion is a natural result of the nation’s fast developing of economy and society in the past decades. (It need not and cannot be curbed.) On the other hand, we should not be too hasty in expanding universities. Instead, we should take all related factors into consideration and ensure that (teaching resources match the number of students in school so that) universities can expand in a healthy way. (词数为257。如果只需要150词左右则文章中括号里的部分可以省略) 四、谚语警句型 2. Where There Is a Will, There Is a Way A well-known proverb goes that “where there is a will, there is a way”, which means that one can find a way to success as long as he or she has a strong will. With a strong will, one can focus all his energy on one point, which makes his success possible. Without a strong will, however, one can be easily distracted from his goal or discouraged by setbacks, which leads to his ultimate failure. (或 A well-known proverb goes “Where there is a will, there is a way”, which means that one can find a way to success as long as he or she has a strong will. With a strong will, one can focus all his energy on one point, which makes his success possible; with a strong will, one can find any chance possible and make the best use of it; besides, with a strong will, one can move people around him or her, thus obtaining help and hints from them.) History abounds with examples of strong-willed figures winning success. Actually, there is no better illustration of the proverb than the deeds of Gou Jian, king of Yue in ancient China. Defeated by Fu Chai, king of Wu, Gou tried every means possible to steel his will. Eventually, with the help of Fan Li and Xi Shi, he managed to rebuild his country and his armies and had Fu Chai taste the bitterness of failure. The same is true in scientific research or daily life. Take English study for example. Without a strong will, one may easily lose his or her heart in the face of numerous new words or grammatical rules. Similarly, without a strong will, one may give in to shyness and embarrassment and make no progress with oral English. In short, a strong will is essential if we want to make achievements in our studies or work, or indeed in any other aspect of our lives. One should lose no chance to strengthen his will and remember, God helps those who help themselves.
